Ovary sparing spay (Teilkastration)

Hello everyone!

I was wondering if OSS (ovary sparing spay) is a possible bitch castration alternative in Switzerland. As I understand, its called Teilkastration in German, but I could not find any source offering that over here. We are facing life situation, where not being able to reproduce would make everyday life easier to manage, yet the health risks of standart castration are definitely keeping me from that option.

Any information and advices highly appreciated!

Interesting question...

As you probably already know, the opposite surgery, ovariectomy (removal of ovaries but not uterus) is pretty much the norm here.

Is continued hormone production the reason why you are looking into OSS?

I'd probably recommend checking out the Tierspital (Abteilung Kleintierreproduktion), here:

Schedule an appointment for a consultation to discuss options and methods. If you have any trouble getting an appointment, ask your general practice vet to refer you.

I don't know if they offer OSS, or not - but they would likely be the folks on the cutting edge of both surgery and reproductive medicine. IMO worth looking into as a start.

When you do find someone, might I ask that you come back with an update? Your experience will likely help others with similar concerns.

Prof. Arnold is the door to knock on in this regard.

Good luck.

Felix,

Have you found the information you need to make a decision?

Just as an FYI, we met with Prof Dr Reichler, who leads the small animal reproduction department at the Tierspital. I found her very helpful, very knowledgeable. If you are still seeking info/advice, she might be another resource.

I had a referral to see her, which I would expect might be necessary. I would imagine your primary vet could refer you.
