Hi,
Does anyone know where I can find oxtail meat in Basel?
Kind regards,
Chinaza
Mirgos does sell them occasionally for dirt cheap.
I wouldn't quite say 'dirt cheap'
What I discovered is that you can order most cuts of meat from the meat counter at the supermarket. I ordered oxtail once from the COOP meat counter.
Now I can get it quite easily from a shop called Fleisch Discount, but I don't think that they have one close to you.
Any local butcher should have oxtail, or at least should be able to get it for you.
Surprisingly, my local butcher is less expensive than Migroop. I've often found this with cuts that are not quite mainstream or not so popular here.
Thanks everyone! I'll check out these places! It's good to know that oxtail is available here.
How are you planning on preparing this? I usually slow braise in red wine and tomatoes and serve with mashed potatoes. (That I make with butter, cream and a dollop of wholegrain Dijon mustard)
Man, I'm hungry!!!
The ones I found were always below 1 Chf for the entire pack. Mind you, there isn't much meat on them but usually enough to make the dishes. I'm thinking that we're having a bit of cross-cultural miscommunication and you're thinking of bone marrow (osso buco) then indeed, it isn't cheap.
I'm taking a guess here, that OP is either cooking oxtails soup or stewed oxtail a la Caribbean.
Nope, I am talking about oxtail and if I recall correctly it was about CHF17/kg.
Oh, and Ossobuco is not bone marrow, but an italian dish using veal shanks. Of course those shanks would have bone marrow in the middle of the bone.
Is it just me, or is bone marrow one of the best things that one can eat?
I agree, absolutely love both osso buco and oxtail.
Whenever I buy oxtail, I find it at Migros for less than 1 Chf for half a dozen pieces. They're not always available, well, they're usually not available and it's most luck whenever I find it.
I sent my daughter to the butchers in Basel for oxtail. 35CHF per kilo.
Someone here said it was cheap.
Ochsenschwanz. Sometimes sold as "Fleisch für Tiere" (Meat for animals) like other delicacies such as chicken hearts and necks, or Leistenfleisch (Hanging Tender Steak/Onglet).
Just be careful that you do no get the other Ochsen"schwanz"

Tell the butcher it is for the dog. Same piece for less price.
I was going to recommend an online butcher that I’ve recently found that does proper bbq cuts (currently have a brisket smoking - the first item I’m trying from them), but there oxtail is also 35 a kilo, which seems crazy. That’s about the same price as the brisket, pork shoulder etc.
I usually slow cook it with beef brother and onions with some red wine. And then add tomatoes and rosemary for the last hour of cooking. Then I tend to cook it at a higher temperature to reduce the liquid a little and increase the flavour, I do this until it comes off the bone. I just ordered some from migros at 15CHF per KG
