parking in basel

Hi there

I am a vistor with my family to basel, and I am going to rent a car from the hilton hotel basel, but I need a free or cheap parking for my own car which I wil leave in basel for 11 days.

Can you please help me with presice location of the parking?

many thanks

You will find "some" white parking places nearby the center. I live near Bethesdaspital and there you can find a long row of free parking lot. Best to find an empty one is at around 5pm when people going home. Or near the Birs in the Lehenmattstrasse or Birsstrasse is also good.

Good luck and best regards,

B

There is lot's of free parking, you just need to find a space.

Basically, parking is unrestricted where the roads have white parking lines, and restricted for blue, or by pay meters, permits etc.

The Hilton is in a difficult area, and I'm not aware of unrestriced parking very close.

My advice would be drive off into the local suburbs and look for a spot.

You shouldn't have to go more than a mile to find something.

Hochstrasse in Gundeli - this is along the Bahnhof. Just the other side of it.

10 - 15 minutes walk from Hilton.

Make sure you park within the white stripes.

Hi,

actually I was about to ask the same thing. I have visitors coming to visit next weekend and they will come by car. So did I understand right that all the white stripes are free? And regarding the blue lines, are they free during Sundays and holidays?

Hi Guys!

I need to sort of hijack this thread because I have my parents in law visiting on Friday night and staying over to help us move. I was wondering if you know where could they park? We live near the johaniterbrucke and the frauenspital, is there any place for them to park there just for one night? Also...I know the blue lines are restricted parking areas but could we get a temporary pass only for one night?

Thanks!!!!!!!!

A

In most towns the old adage that white paint for parking spaces equals free parking has long since gone. Whole areas of towns are designated with white paint, but at the beginning are boards explaining that here is residence parking, with visitors restricted to one hour during working days. So be very careful where you leave the car.

All the towns in Switzerland are trying to stop people drving into towns and parking the car. They want you to use public transport.

The safest way is to visit the Gemeindepolizei or Stadtpolizei. They are usually only open during working hours but will be able to advise you or sell you a short term parking permit. http://tel.local.ch/de/q/Gemeinde%20...1485&y2=282549

Hi Angela,

If it's not too far from you, I would try Mittlere Strasse or somewhere around it. I used to live down there and always managed to find a space. If it's still the same as it was when I was there, most of the parking was free for anyone.

There's a huge underground car park below the frauenspital/university hospital - entrance on Klingelbergstrasse/Schanzenstrasse. Can you not park there?

Alternatively what about looking for an on-the-street spot. It really does depend on how long you want to leave the car there. The blue spaces are for residents during the day and limited to 90 min for visitors during working hours, but in the evening from 19:00 hrs (I think) it is free until 0700 hrs in the morning, + 90 minutes in the morning if you set your blue disk to the right time. So if only overnight, this is an option.

Another option you may wish to consider is whether or not to get those "no parking" cones from the police that stipulate a time that you can have a parking zone cleared in front of your house/flat. If you are genuinely going to be using a car to move furniture all day, then you can hire them for the required time. The only thing is, I can't remember if they are limited for official removal firms or not.

Ittigen - Basel still has "free" white spaces, especially in residential areas. You are right in that you do need to check carefully though, as some are indeed metered. But if no meter and no other stipulations (signposted), then it is free for as long as you want.

great! I know where it is and I am pretty sure my father in law wouldn't mind the short walk. We lived there too for a short while (temporary housing) Thanks!

Thanks so much Carlitos!

Do you know where can I get those cones? I think we could alternatively use the blue spots since it will be only overnight and then at 7:30 we already have to leave as I am having furniture delievered at 8 am at the new place (silly me I know) ahhh

The cones have to be obtained from the police station within your area/district - sorry, I don't know what they are officially called. You also don't want to leave it to the last minute to get them, as sometimes they run out. You can get them a few days ahead of when you need them.

Did your removals firm not ask you to get them for your delivery?

No they did not ask us for that. They recon it will take about 2 journeys for the stuff to be removed and there is a sort of parking place in front of the building for temporary parking when you are moving so maybe that is why?

I will have to go on Friday as that is our only free day before the move, hopefully we can get them

GRACIAS!

De nada

If you are moving on Friday or Saturday, really really really check ahead or book ahead if you can. I had to go to 3 different stations a few years back because they had run out of cones over the weekend period... it is a popular time of the week to move for many people (for obvious reasons).

I currently live in one of the East Coast megacities in the US and I gave up on public transport years ago once I realized I was wasting more time and spending more money on it. The freedom of driving and commuting is much more pleasurable (it's just a personal preference). Plus I'm a bit of a claustrophobe so crowded trains aren't my thing to begin with.

But, I was just looking at my new employer's office address on Google Earth and it does not 'appear' that there are any cars there!!! Surely people do drive to work in die Schweiz!

So where do they park? I can't imagine that it's competitive parking for white-stripped spots each morning.

Are their parking garages in Klein Basel?

After some more research I think I've come to the realisation that one should rent a parking space for ~100-200CHF in der nàˆhe from where they would like to park. Correct?

Public transport in Basel is good value for money (700CHF a year covers the whole TNW region), regular, frequent and efficient. And, except at very peak times, not crowded. It's also safe - you'll find a wide cross-section of people on the trams and business into the small hours. If I had a parking space close to work, it would take me just as long, if not longer to drive in as to go by tram.

Some employers provide parking spaces for their employees - but at least one large company has started restricting these to people who live a fair distance away.

As to where all these cars are parked - Basel is ~850 feet above sea level. That leaves a LOT of volume for underground carparks. The office I work in, in central Basel, has 7 levels above ground and 5 below. The bottom three are all for cars.

IF ( big if ) we go with the car to Basel, 3 or 4 times a year at max, we park at St.Alban (waterside) - 5 Chf a day but you need to get in early to get a good spot.

You can only stand on the same spot ( numbered) for 24 hours, just go up in the morning and move the car, make it your morning walk

From there we take public transport into town..but again that happens rarely as the train station here is only a few steps away, beats driving the car into Basel town.

Hello,

My friend is looking for an affordable underground carpark (Parkhaus) near or not far to Basel SBB train station . She's fluent in Swiss German but she doesn't know Basel very well. Anybody can help us? Many thanks.
