Pears compared to Apples, your opinions please!

I would like to know your opinion on pears compared to apples. I always eat apples, have only seen pears but never had one. Thoughts?

(yes I'm taking the mick, feel free to groan away...)

well, its certainly not an apple to apple comparison!

No.... see I've been eating apples for a few years now, before that just bananas and keep seeing people with pears... Whats the advantage of a pear?

This thread has all the makings of Free Beer.

How about we compare Free Beer to Pears.

As for the Apples Pears comparison, it depends on what kind of apple you are talking about. Its hard to beat a nice Granny Smith.

I'm not allergic to them.

Can't help you with pears.

Now, if you were talking about oranges...

not sure why you mention free beer.. really! I'm asking a serious question and surely I can expect a serious answer??

As for Granny Smith, well I'm more of a Boskop apple eater myself but really I think I'd like to try something new, having exhausted the whole range of apples these past 3 years, my stomach and I would like to try something different. The problem ist just, well, I hear pears are expensive is this true?

Also, do you think it would be difficult for my stomach to try a pear? I still only have just the one stomach and no beer gut so perhaps now is the best time??? or a pears more of a beer gut delicacy?

Try it you like it ,I grew up in the country ,Bruetten ZH ,we always had pears. Also pear juice mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Thats wy I am so good looking

For me an apple is a good snack, but Pears (lightly grilled) are great friends with Gorgonzola, Palma Ham and Walnuts set on Ciabatta bread for a great lunch, yum...

I prefer pears. Not an apple fan other than Granny Smith!

Pink Lady 's got Granny Smith beat to the core..!

I'm not much of an apple eater (more like not at all) but I was blown away the first time I tried a Pink Lady..!!

Pears are really nice - if you get to eat them within the 10-minute time-frame in which they are perfect! Before that they are too hard, afterwards they go soft very quickly.

Lovely with chocolate sauce as a dessert, with cheese (as already mentioned), or with venison and cranberry sauce in Autumn...

What you need is a good transition fruit like a nashi. You can't expect to make that big leap all in one go.

One thing I find quite odd is that, despite the similarities between apples and pears, they don't tend to be substituted for each other in recipes.

e.g. I have never had pear crumble or seen apples in tinned fruit salad.

Can't beat a nice pair!

Talking of Nice Pair's, I remember that high-brow Conservative think thank, Loaded Magazine did womens breast sizes as different types of fruit a number of years ago and suddenly all those confusing 32FD G H whatever it is all made sense when you said well she's a couple of Oranges, prunes or Melons. The general thought amongst the blokes at the time was that the cup size mechanism should be replaced by this easier to understand scale.

That's what she said.
