Peppermint Essence/Extract

Hope there's a Nigella out there that can help me.

I have the Nigella Express cookbook and like quite a few of the recipes. At Christmas my sister in law made the white chocolate and mint mousse - really really good.

So would like to make it here but have tried Coop, Migros, Denner and Globus for peppermint essence and poor old Dr Oeticker (or however you spell it) doesn't do it, or at least the shops mentioned don't stock it;rum, vanilla, and lemon but no mint.

Any ideas on where I can get it or do I have to wait until Easter and I go back to UK????

hi there

i am not so sure but may be you could try a reformhaus. i have found there pretty unusual things. may be they will have it.

cheers

Hi there, I also thought of a reformhaus, but I bet Jack will have a solution. you might want to PM him directly...

Berg-Apotheke on Stauffacherstrasse 26...Look for Minzöl in the many oils they have just as you enter the shop...

Hmmm. I feel inspired to make some of that icing sugar pepperminty stuff we used to make as kids now, so let us know if you find some.

p.s. My whiteboard cleaner smells quite minty. I'm not going to taste if for you though...

Thanks Jack - not sure the oil will work - it's for chocolate mousse and the essence is more alcohol based (there's me sounding like I know what I'm talking about). Will go anyway and see what is available.

For other Nigella fans, made the mincemeat parcels....but more importantly the bourbon butter that was actually Glenmorangie butter ( no bourbon in this house) - butter is super nice, parcels good.

Hmm...don't follow Nigella much, so wasn't up on the recipe. You could take a few drops of the mint oil and put that in about 1 dl of vodka, which gives you a different type of essence... Worth a try perhaps...

Jack

Thanks Jack - I may give that a try. I had a look at the reformhaus in Zurich HB but couldn't find the mint oil - I am not giving up that easily tho'

the lovely www.britshop.ch can get hold of things for you - they don't have it in stock, I just looked, but they've always got things for me when I've asked.

Appreciate that - will try Jack's idea first and then am going back to UK at Easter so can get some then.

since this thread is a little old, I was wondering if anybody has managed to find Peppermint extract somewhere in the meantime?

I haven't found any (haven't been looking hard either to tell the truth) but the "bump" of this thread inspired me to search.

I've found a recipe here ( Uncle Phaedrus , Finder of Lost Recipes) for a variety of extracts, mint is as follows:

Peppermint Extract

1/2 cup fresh chopped peppermint leaves

1/2 cup vodka

Directions:

To make an extract, combine the ingredients in a 1/2-pint Mason jar and set aside to steep. Each recipe can be stored anywhere and should keep for up to a year.

Fill container 1/2 full with vodka, add 1/2 cup fresh chopped peppermint. Fill rest of way with water and let stand for 3 weeks. Pour through strainer, cheesecloth, or coffee filter to remove solids.

has anyone found peppermint extract??? i'm in a jam, and so far- no luck!!!

Hi, I know this thread is aging, but I am in the geneva/lausanne area looking for anything peppermint for holiday baking. Do they do peppermint candies here? I have some favorite recipes that involved crushed peppermints. I can't even find candy canes for my kids' stockings! And yes, I need the extract....

I'd call Schwarzenbach in Zurich and see if they have it.
