Permit status while changing the job

I have read few cases at forum, but was not sure if my questions has an answer.

I am non-EU, I have been hired by a company A since two months, from canton Vaud, but canton Neuchatel provided me with a residence permit B which is still valid 9 months. I have a job offer by company B from Basel, which i would like to join.

My question is, if i leave current company A, my permit will be taken back or will stay valid till expiry, and company B will need to apply for another permit for me?

Your permit most likely will be tied to your current employer so will become null and void if you leave that employer.

Your new employer will have to apply for a permit so best not to resign until you know for sure you will get a new permit.

Thank you so much, very valueable information. I would still welcome more answers on the topic to be very sure that if i leave this employer, and there is gap between joining the next, i can still keep current permit or not.

Short answer, no. Never leave your current job until you know your new employer has been granted a new permit for you.

As roegner said, your permit is most likely tied to your current employer so as soon as you leave them you no longer have a permit to live/work here.

There’s no guarantee your new employer will be granted a permit for you so don’t resign until that’s confirmed. Otherwise you’ll have no job, no permit and would need to leave the country pretty fast unless you’re a non-EU national who doesn’t need a tourist visa to visit Switzerland.

You need to ask the labor market office of your canton if you can switch jobs on your current permit.

If they say yes (meaning you have an 'open' B permit in the jargon of this forum) then it's okay to have a couple months break before starting at the new employer. If they say no, then your new employer will need to apply for a new permit for you and you won't be able to both leave your current job and stay in Switzerland until it's approved.

For 10 years I had a B permit from Geneva tied to my employer. After two years I wanted to move to Vaud (no change to emplyer). I needed permissions from both Geneva and Vaud. That happened and my new permit issued by Vaud was annotated that it was not valid for gainful employment in Vaud.

I could live in Vaud, but I couldn’t work there.

That continued until I got my C permit.

What does it say on the back of the permit?

It should give you all the info about the type of permit.

I’m am pretty sure that as a non EU your permit will be tied to your employer so you will automatically lose it if you quit the job. Your new company will need to apply for a permit for you.

Don’t do anything until you have double checked with the cantonal authorities in Neuchâtel.
