Can anyone tell me who to talk to? My dog and 3 cats are microchipped and it does not make sense if I do not register them here in Switzerland too.

You need to visit a local vet. They will scan the animals and do the necessary paperwork to register them in Switzerland.

And you think I can apply for it through the website? Maybe it's chaeper than going to the vet. Any idea? Also cos I do not have a car here and taking a weimaraner and 3 lively cats is something like travelling with a crazy zoo )
Just an FYI - ANIS registration of dogs is supposed to be done within 10 days of arrival in Switzerland or of acquiring the dog. Only a vet can do the registration. (Dogs, that is - part of the law introduced 1 Jan 2007.)
Also, you may need to register your dog at the Gemeinde as well - because, of course, you will need to pay the dog tax. The good folks at my Gemeinde ask for proof of liability insurance coverage when you register (liability coverage is mandatory for dog owners in SZ), as well as a copy of the letter from ANIS confirmating that your are duly registered in their database.
Different rules for different Gemeinde, etc. etc. so call ahead and ask them what documents, if any, you will need to bring to register your dogs.
Dog registration where we have lived previously was April, not sure if they will pro-rate the amount as this is August. When we first returned home it was October and the Gemeinde only charged us 50% of the usual tax .
This year when I registered the dogs on the appointed date I came fully prepared with their immunization books, and the ANIS cards with the chip numbers. They told me they didn't require any of this. Just name of the dog, breed and owner's details. At least they had the good sense to record each tag number beside the dog's name. Last year, different Gemeinde, they just handed me all three tags. When I asked which tag belongs to which dog they said it didn't matter.
Different rules, but at the end of the day, you pay everywhere. I figure it covers the cost of the robidog. They just recently placed a new one just a few doors from our house, (luckily not right in front). Very convenient.

Today i took Congo to the vet. She wanted to see im to scan the chip with the scanner. Then she just took my details and asked me to pay 45francs for registration. Then she said i should receive confirmation by post within a month and then i should go to the police and pay out 250 francs as tax for the dog, payable every year.
I know thi might sound lame, but why does a person have to pay tax to keep a dog? Do you get any benefit out of it? I don't understand.
Do cats also need to be registered and pay tax on them too?
A robidog is a box at the side of the road with small garbage-like bags. You stock up on the bags there and then when Congo does his business you pick it up and tie the bag closed. You then deposit Congo's business in the compartment provided by the robidog. It helps conscientious dog owners keep public walkways and roads poo-free.
I guess the dog tax covers the muinicipality putting robidogs at disposal, restocking the bags and keeping a list of who owns what dog in case it runs off. In exchange for your money you get a tag with a unique number on it which would allow the police to track you down if your dog strayed. Of course with microchips that is not as important as it used to be. But, if you don't have a chip reader to hand the old-fashioned way works too. I guess the money also covers picking up the mess left behind by dogs whose owners are far less conscientious than us or I am sure, you.

Why is there dog tax? I have no idea - only to say because you have a dog. Why do you pay car tax? Because you have a car! Dogs and cars fall under "tax on possessions". The good news is there's no cat tax. The only benefits of paying the dog tax is the joy of owning one. The idea of a dog tax isn't new. Until the late '80s if you owned a dog in the UK you had to pay for a dog licence. There was never a cat licence in the UK either. Why no cat licence? Anyone who has cats will tell you cats are their own boss. Nobody owns a cat. The cat owns you!
It's worth noting that in Vaud, we no longer receive the tags. Our vet told us that tags where no longer compulsary, only microchips.
That's right. We don't even get a tag no more. The microchips are good though. Last National Day one of our dogs did a runner. We searched high and low but no sign until we got a call from the Police around 10pm inviting us to collect our houdini from the commune's police station.

In Zuerich as well you do not get a tag anymore BUT microchip is not enough, you still need to pay the dog tax which is prorated (if you register your dog in July you pay a little over 50%). But you must register your dog immediately in case of an older dog or before the puppy turns 6 months.

The tax pays for all those lovely little trash cans with poopie bags & part of the street cleaning for those who don't use the poopie bags!
In Bern you only need to regsiter at Gemeinde provided that you have microchip number handy...

thanks for the info about the robidog....i was kind of imagining a machine operated robotic doggie. Congo already ran away once, jumping over a one and a half meter gate in the garden, thank god, i found him after a few hours with an old man, who unfortuanately, was pulled all the way towards me by the dog when he saw me, while i looked in horror praying the man would just let the leash loose before he is thrown to the ground. Anyway, registration is a good idea. Thanks to all for your help

Guess I need to check about this tax business here in Maur geminde (ZH)as registered the four legged fiend last week and no mention of Tax what so ever. Registered with vet to do ANIS business and no mention of tax then, only that will take a month for little credit card to turn up to say that been registered.

I came with my dog and the registration was made at the airport, they have the microchip scanner and charged 88 CHF and according to them, nothing else should be done. Maybe this helps.

We received our dog-tax bill yesterday for our two dogs. CHF 65.00 for the first dog and CHF 185.00 for the second dog. Kind of strange that they charge more for a second dog (the second dog poops about the same amount as the first one). Anybody know the rationale of this?
