Pet sitting during main holiday period...

PLEASE remember it can be VERY difficult, or impossible- to find a pet sitter during July/August and the Christmas/new Year period. If you need a sitter during those times, make sure you advertise months in advance to ensure your pets are well looked after. Asking a few days or even weeks before, especially during peak times- may well mean you will not find anybody- and certainly nobody reliable and suitable.

When I see such requests I can't help wonder- what do these people do if they do not find someone on time? People often book long holidays, pay for flights or package... and then try and find a pet sitter. Our previous dog was found emaciated in the street early September- and the vet guessed the answer to the above question. 100000s of pets are abandoned due to not finding suitable, or being able to afford, good pet sitters, and find themselves in a refuge, starving and/or injured. Please.

Or take your pet with you and do not travel too far -which is what we have done since Cazimir died in a kennel (run by a vet,no less!) while we were in Spain. Now we only go to Italy, rent a house and bring Ebby along.

I have found that Booking.com has a "pet friendly" filter. This has been invaluable when planning a driving holiday around Bavaria and North Austria. Although many say there is a possible extra change, once I explain he is 3kg and sleeps in his bad, so far I have not had to pay an additional charge.

I am happy to have the companionship and sure it will make the holiday time much more fun.

We always have the problem that many places allow "small pets" so we send pictures of our principessa in advance and it has worked out for 2 years in a row.

And this year we don't have to worry about any gentleman callers

I'm having to stay behind alone (apart from 2 dogs and 4 rabbits), whilst my wife goes galivanting off in foreign lands with the kids.

I think Chilli will weigh less than Ebby's leg! Glad you still find somewhere accommodating though.

I just don't travel when others do. I don't enjoy prices, crowds and all craziness of airports during Christmas.

We do travel in July, so I make arrangements for Lily in May. We've used booking.com a lot when we travel with Lily - it's been very helpful.

That's what we'd all like to do but unfortunately those of us with school age kids don't have any option.

Umm, you can always just not travel then.
