Pets are the new kids

Yena Kim, the creator of Menswear Dog, shares her deep bond with her Shiba Inu, Bodhi. She quit her dream job at Ralph Lauren to dedicate her time to Bodhi and build a successful social media brand around him. This trend of millennials prioritizing pets over parenthood is evident in the increasing number of pet owners and the rise of pet-centric businesses.

Some, like Hayley Kellard, find solace and purpose in their pets, going to great lengths to care for them. Others, like Michael and Adriene Wang, view their dogs as “starter kids,” gaining experience in parenting before having human children. However, experts caution against excessive pampering, which can lead to behavioral and health issues in pets. It’s essential to strike a balance between providing love and care and setting appropriate boundaries for a healthy and fulfilling relationship with a pet.

Not new really. And when people call “come to daddy” or “listen to mummy” you really wonder if they ever think about what they are saying

To compare having children and having dogs is already crazy imo.
Children demand more responsibility? Surprise! They also live a lot longer than dogs (generally, hopefully), they take much longer to become adults and you can’t throw them out of their home/take them from their mother 8 weeks after birth. They don’t go lie down in some basket and stay quiet when you tell them to (generally, hopefully), you can’t put them on a leash all day long when ever you leave the house and pull roughly on it when they don’t walk by foot, they develop their own mind and view on the world and life (generally, hopefully) and go their own way one day and only come back to see you if they want to.

Because this unbiased love of a dog is mainly sheer dependency - I mean, what are they supposed to do?

I mean don’t get me wrong, I like dogs. But they’re adult creatures, don’t want to be carried around or walk at your darn slow pace all life long. They don’t want to wear this silly stuff you squeeze them into, they might eat chocolate but would prefer something decent which you might find disgusting.

Unbiased love … an inteligent dog which (do I have to write “who” in order not to insult a millenial?) gets treated like listed above probably thinks you’re a right plonker 90% of the day.

I don’t even know why I bit (maybe to revenge all these poor dogs which would be put down for it, to make use of the pun). Ah well, it’s late. And come to think of it: Thank God these people have dogs and not children!

I admire your investment acumen but I really cannot manage any more subscriptions.

I was wondering what you meant, but I guess you are one of the few people who still browse the web without an ad/paywall blocker. I added a brief summary to the OP.

I do use Adblock (Chrome) but this site is particularly pernicious and annoying with its subscription requests. I’ve tried it on my phone too and the article is unreadable due to the nagging pop ups.

I disable javascript for this site too.

It’s downright weird for pet owners to refer to themselves as the “mum/dad/parent” of a pet. Weirder still - and possibly indicative of outright foolishness, especially when it comes to dogs - is when owners introduce a new baby to a pet as the pet’s “brother” or “sister” (or vice versa).

Wonder if this dog was a “brother” or “sister”. Beggars belief that the parents allowed it around their child.

Police confirm dog that killed girl was XL bully

When everyone knows, brothers generally can be nasty.

From the link: “To aid the report for the coroner, an autopsy is due to take place on the dog to help determine if there were any medical factors involved,”
Always good to set priorities :woman_facepalming:

I don’t understand these people.

They have a six year old daughter and decide to get a pet dog. Out of all the breeds they choose, they go for an XL bully, a known killer, bred to be a killer.
“But he was out of character” when, four years later, he killed their daughter, they cry.

Look at this beautiful cat, all sleepy and cuddly…

If any “dog lovers” come up with the argument which they seem to trot out every time, “But little Yorkshire terriers are more likely to bite you”, is not really understanding the issues and perhaps shouldn’t be keeping pets.

I had dogs all my life, all trained by me (my instructor was a canine officer for the London Met’s Dog Support Unit). I would never have a bully in my life.

I think this is a very US thing…a few years ago in our alumni WhatsApp group, a US couple “announced” they have become “parents” to a dog, all accompanied with a few GB too much of photos and videos, which was met with very open ridicule by the Latino and European (me incl.) alumni. They never repeated that rubbish and are yet to post anything in the group after that.

I’d be more worried if someone introduced their dog as their wife, or their bitch.

Isn’t the term for females spayed?

My wife introduces me as “my semi-developed ape”, but I guess thats more factual than offensive

I appreciate one might might have an old, or infirm pet but the market size suggests that people are using these to take dogs around when the dog is perfectly capable, and more than willing, to walk.

I apologise if I have offended any dogs:

Maybe this is only me, but the few cases when I’ve seen this here, it has inevitably been an elderly person and I’ve always assumed its someone lonely and needing someone to take care of, feeling needed…

I’m sure you’re right.

Dogs do make fantastic companions and are extremely loyal.
