Hello,
I just got my B Permit and I have a full-time job. While I was waiting for my permit to come through earlier this year, I was looking around for potential supervisors for my thesis. One of them just confirmed their interest recently. I am really keen on doing a PhD along with my work now as it will help me improve my job prospects in the future. However, I am not keen on giving up my current job or the permit my employers sought for me.
My B Permit is tied to my job but I am allowed to take up work outside of the main work hours (with the permission of my employers). Can I do a PhD under my current B Permit. I do not intend to take up any position within the university and just want to do research to get my Doctorate (like a self-funded PhD without the need for TA). Is this possible?
As far as I know for sociology department at Geneva and Lausanne, there are no specific classes to attend. May I still register for a PhD without changing my current permit or will they require me to change my status.
I have seen many people in international organizations do their PhD while working. Is there any such provision available at the public universities here in Switzerland?
Any information on this would be great.
Thanks in advance.
Would you have time to do this? Always thought that was quite time intensive which is why people do their PhD full time
Yeah, I would. It would be on a subject that is closely related to my work. Time is not my concern. I am more concerned that they may want to me change my status to that of a student which will put my current job in jeopardy and I will not have my permit anymore.
I doubt a tied B permit allows you to work for anyone else except your Swiss employer, that’s why it’s a tied one. But check with your cantonal migration office and see what they say. They’re the ones who’ll make the decision on any permit changes.
Hi there, thanks for the reply.
The terms of my contract aside, I dont intend to work with any university if I start my PhD. As I understand not all PhD students need to be teaching assistants (or in other words hired by the Universities)
I just want to be able to get my Doctorate. For that I dont want to change my current permit or my job so I was wondering whether there are any options for working professionals to do their PhD on the side.
Talk to your cantonal migration office. Only they can tell you whether you can or not.
You should verify that you can do a PhD without a work contract and salary, maybe in sociology it's possible.
If you can do that, then ask the migration office.
