I got phd in basel. I would like whether I should apply for work permit or student permit.
Do you intend to work? If so the employer applies for the work permit but bear in mind, times are hard, jobs are scarce..
If you intend to study then apply for a student visa...
You will get a student B permit that allows you to work. There is no choice here.
You should have been given a contract along with the PhD offer from the university, and the university will apply for the work permission.
You apply for a standard Schengen type D visa from India (entry for long stay)
Thank you so much for the kind reply. Another question is, I am planning to bring my spouse to Swiss on dependent visa. So I wish to know whether he will be provided work permit or not. If not, is there any possibility ? He is highly capable to obtain a job here. We would be glad if he will get a work permit.
thanks much.. please have a look at my another question below.
Whether your spouse will be given a permit allowing him to work depends on the cantonal migration office. I have seen it go either way depending on the canton of residence.
Ask your university / non-EU PhD students living in Basel as to what kind of permit their spouses received. Also, be aware that there are two cantons in the Basel region, Basel-Land and Basel-Stadt.
