Physical therapy and insurance

I was diagnosed with some Cervical spine problems in my home country and doctor advised me to do physical therapy for 1~2 months. I wonder if I can just take my medical certificate to a local Physiotherapist and they'll know how to help me with the spine problems, or I should talk to another Swiss doctor to arrange for it?

Also how does the insurance work in that situation? FWIW, I fell off the stairs and went to ER of my local hospital. The doctor there only gave me pain killer but then my situation worsened. I took a few X-ray and did another check in my home country and found a few issues from the X-ray. However I'm not sure if those problems are caused by that accident or by my improper gestures using computer for years. Should I claim it through my health insurance or accidental insurance (different insurance company)?

You would need to see your doctor here since they will need to prescribe any physical therapy for it to be covered by your insurance company. And he would also give you a better idea of whether it is accident related or not.

Do you know what is the keyword to use to find a Rehabilitation doctor? Or a GP would be enough?

I would think the GP would be enough, but if not then he’d refer you to a specialist to look at your x-rays or have more taken and then it would go on from there. If the specialist thinks physical therapy would help they’d prescribe it.

In order for Swiss insurance to cover the costs, you need to see a Swiss doctor for a Verordnung, these are usually for a maximum of 9 sessions. On further evaluation of your situation/progress additional sessions may, or may not, be ordered.

Sometimes the GP will send you to a specific physio or physio center, but often you need to find someone on your own.

However, not all physotherapists can do spinal exercises, and you may need more extensive testing to determine exactly what is wrong before a therapist will work with you.

I, too, have spinal problems. At least that is what the GP thinks, but I am still waiting for a neurology appointment for further testing. My GP cannot do diagnostic testing.

My GP gave me a Verordnung for 9 sessions to work on the pain while waiting for the neurology appointment. The wait for a neurology appointment where I live is 6 months or longer. (Access to specialists tends to be limited where we live, if you are in a more urban area, or one better served medically, you likely would not have to wait so long.)

Unfortunately I could not find a physio who would work on my spine without knowing exactly what is wrong - which makes sense when you think about it. So I am waiting...

If your diagnosis from your home country is specific enough that a physio would know what to do, you could always go see one on your own... But be aware that without a Verordnung from a Swiss doctor basic insurance likely would not pay. Do you have supplemental insurance?

Honestly, your fastest resolution would be to go see your GP. Bring your diagnosis from home, including any x-rays, mri results, etc. That should be enough for your GP to get the ball rolling with a Verordnung.

Good luck!
