Pinterest opens office in Zurich

I thought Pinterest was going down, but it’s growing. They will open an office in Zurich for development of AI and machine learning. What the…? I guess ads need and “AI” behind to power them.

A few comments:

  • 39% tariff for export of goods to USA. Software is not a good, export of services is not that bad.
  • Damn idiot Americans, they ignore Switzerland has a great apprenticeship system. Why are they hiring ETHZ graduates?
  • I’ve heard Zurich has a housing shortage, so time to complain about damned foreigners earning too much, 3,2,1…go!

Hm interesting they’re really hiring in ZH

Indeed, 6 open positions on their website:

“Pinterest has poached several long-standing executives from rival Google for its planned development center on the Limmat River.”
All fine then, they already live here.

Hm in general I’d say it’s good, no? It makes the overall job market more diverse

Yes!

I was joking about stereotypical complains about foreigners (us)

Agreed. It is also interesting they do this exactly now (although I’m sure the planning started long ago).

@Axa I know you were. Anyway, the google-people occupy the flats with rents we don’t want to pay even if we could. Someone’s got to use them.

Hey, I’m pissed off because google people pay 5k/month apartments which I’m neither interested in occupying nor willing to pay for them. Anyway, I’m pissed off…am I integrating well?

Eh If I had a Google salary I’d rathe be saving up for a mortgage..

I dunno…I used Pinterest for years for inspiration in decor and food, but lately some of the goods pushed on there are clearly AI-generated “photos” of items that do not exist. Read some of the reviews for clothing, etc., and people complain that what they got was not anything like what was pictured. I wonder how long Pinterest can remain relevant. I know I’m about to sign off.

Can’t tell. People say “you’re not Swiss” to me all the time although I insist and can prove it. So I guess to those who like reading between lines I’m a non-integrated Swiss :woman_shrugging:

I give you an international point of view: Being pissed off about other people having what you don’t even want is a stupid waste of energy.

I never believed it was real, read it, I always blocked this fluff just like FB

To me it is a very strange site. Interesting search results often came up but couldn’t be accessed without an account. So after a long time of stalling I thought what the heck and created an account. But somehow I still couldn’t really access those search results. It’s a very long time ago, I don’t remember the details. I “stored” it in my mind as a useless site and when ever a pinterest result pops up now when I search something I simply ignore it.
So maybe you’re right and it just isn’t real.

Similar tactics on Chinese web, like aliexpress, etc. will show you almost anything you’re searching for and with an unbelievable low prices, but when you login many of the products are unavailable and the price jumps (you have to search from a clear browser ofc, not just being logged out).

aliexpress offer low prices to new users, so once you’ve registered, you don’t get the first time deals any more.

I don’t have a login on ali express, never ordered anything there.
They do have all my hippy-clothes I would love to get but thankfully they are all made of polyester so I was never seriously tempted.

The thing with pinterest is that there seems to be so much cool diy stuff on there. As I said, never really accessed them in the end. For me the interesting pinterest results were never about buying anything.

Same here…lots of ingenious hacks and good links to recipes and decorating ideas. The problem is that so much AI-generated stuff has infiltrated. You can’t really tell it’s AI until you try to make your food, your Christmas tree, or whatever look like theirs (!)

They do have quality stuff too, after all everything is made in China. Just filter out anything with too low price, if it doesn’t cost at least half of European price it’s polyester or whatever. Well, I don’t buy clothes on such sites, only DYI stuff or spare parts I can’t otherwise buy in Switzerland.

Exactly. I was looking for some apero ideas recently and Pinterest was completely useless because of AI generated images.

How can you tell they’re AI generated?
