Places to eat around Zurich - Good cheap nutrition -

What are the best and cheapest places to eat in Zurich and around Zurichsee, under 20chf for a meal? I am talking about good nutrition where you can get real meat, not McDonald's and kebab.

The Manor restaurant on Bahnhoftrasse offers some good choices of nutrition for reasonable prices. The underground floor of Jelmoli Zurich has a few restaurants where meals are around 20chf.

In Rapperswil we have the Migros Restaurant in the Sonnenhof shopping center and a few kebab places...

Pfaffikon SZ has a few choices: Sukhothai close to the Bahnhof where meals are 16-19 chf, close to the Gemainde Pfaffikon SZ is China Restaurant Lung Fung where a chicken fried rice meal is 13chf, and Metzg am Dorfplatz on the ground floor of the same building owned by the parents of «DSDS»-Star Beatrice Egli that offers meals for 14chf.

Please contribute with your tasty, nutritious and inexpensive food discoveries.

There's an ok place on the west end of langstrasse called Pho Vietnam that does a pretty good Pho Bo dish (vs standards I experienced in NYC) for approx CHF18. Would avoid the chicken satay though as the chicken is seemingly the dregs of the barrel, if you catch my drift....

Food in Coop restaurants is also OK and not expensive.

Great initiative!! My favorite is Hiltl, famous vegetarian buffet, although a normal dish size is over 20chf

Good...Cheap... real meat.

Call me an auld cynic if you like but good and cheap is an oxymoron.

Sorry if it is maybe a little bit offtopic... Do you really like Hiltl? Is it really so good? I seems to be a little bit expensive...

There is Migros restaurant at Hofwiesenstrasse (nearby Globus Herren). You can get all hot meals, made-to-order pasta and pizza and salad bar under 20 CHF.

At Hiltle, you can have any item from the menu (not buffet) with free refill (if you can eat a lot) but most items are around 30-35 CHF.

Saigon (near Sihlstrasse) or Chez Nahn has almost everything under/around 20 CHF. Vietnamese food and very good.

I like this place in Oerlikon.

Halk Pazari Grocery Store Tramstrasse 10, Oerlikon, Zürich 8050

It's a big shop with a restaurant/take away on the side. The daily menus are home cooked, fresh and include lots of vegetables. I recently ate a large plate of stuffed vegetables..aubergine, courgette, pepperoni and tomato served with thick yoghurt and the biggest basket of fresh bread (baked on the premises) that I've ever seen here in Switzerland.

The place is spotlessly clean, simple service and friendly.

It cost 13.50 chf

Not a lot of people know this but you can also use the SBB (staff) restaurant above HB, there is a lift on the Museumstrasse side, near the police office, I think its the third floor.

Its a really cheap subsidised staff restaurant, but it is open to the public as well so you don't need to feel weird going in and they do daily meal deals which includes a salad and a drink for around 14.- to 16.-

Often restaurants do lunchtime menu deals - our local trattoria offers 3 course menus for the SFr30-35 range.

Cheers,

Nick

CHF 35 is hardly cheap...

(Pardon the knee-jerk reaction post - didn't mean to come across rude.) Suppose I need to learn how to cook...

Jucker Farm in Seegräben ZH is open 365 days per year. Their lunch buffet runs about Fr 3.50per 100g. One slice of bread is free with every plate. They also sell bottles of fresh squeezed apple juice for Fr 3 per liter. My family of four eats there for under Fr 50.

Dinner is a lot more expensive as they have the grill going and don't have as much on the buffet to choose from.

http://alpenblickmeilen.ch/ (Toggwil above Meilen 8706) is worth a visit as well, simple but good Swiss menu under Chf20. We visit more in summer as they have a great beer garden with playgound for the kids. Normally we park there and do a walk up to Pffanensteil and back for a late lunch so a nice day out.

That is very good to know. This type of "secret" places is what I was looking for when I started this discussion topic. I will have to try this sbb restaurant this week. Are they only open for lunch or also in the evening?

Another great place to eat is the UBS restaurant which is also open to the public.

The prices are close to the low end...

The menu plan is online daily:

SV (Schweiz) AG

UBS Restaurant Elite

Nüschelerstrasse 6

I love Friends Corner in between Zürich HB and Hardbrücke (Josefstrasse 140). It is around 16CHF for a huge amount of food (enough to feed two easily). It is maybe not the best ambiance for stay in food, but for cheap good Indian I havent found better!

There's a lovely Asian restaurant on Sihlstrasse called Saigon. Prices are not too crazy, there are a selection of dishes for less than 20 chf.

Good to know, time for some payback from the UBS .

I think the SBB restaurant is only open during the day, so I am not sure, I have only been a couple of times for lunch.

marinello has lunch 12.50

alter peter (ex UBS cantine off paradeplatz) is good: 12.50-22.00 chf

manors restaurant has a great lunchbuffet

saftlade in the niederdorf sells lunch 17chf

green lebanon has best shish, köfte etc for 8 chf in town

chinese take away in shopville sells stuff for 15.50

tschingg close to cakefriends in niederdorf has pasta for 10.50

nordsee has fish for 14-20 chf

on langstrasse is an indian takeaway that sells stuff for a 10 chf

on josefstrasse is a tamil doing currys for 15-20 chf

and on and on and on...

yes, it is good. though buffet lacks variety when you look at what vegeterian cuisine is up to. sells the same stuff since forever.

I think the Petite Saigon is the budget take-away.

Sometimes, my co-workers complain that the chicken has the consistency of chewing gum....(cue old joke about dogs)

So, either go for the Pho, the fish-curry or the veggie-curry.

Or don't go during rush-hour.

Portions are big, IMO. So you will rarely leave hungry.
