Integration is a very important thing and it includes enjoying the culinary specialities of Switzerland. It also includes lying through your teeth and agree with your work colleagues “yes, cheese fondue is awesome”, which might be kinda tough to deal with as a lactose intolerant...

But apart from the fact that there is nothing better than mommy’s food, I like to recommend my home country food and until now every single person I shipped to Portugal came back agreeing “Portuguese food is really good”. They might be lying like I do with the fondue, but one has to keep positive thinking

I leave here two recommendations:

Restaurant “Os Alves” in Wald ZH

Ambient is... well... different from your regular dinner in a Swiss restaurant. It is usually full with Portuguese men that just came from the working site and like to discuss football out loud, with a great cold Portuguese beer/ wine. The owner, though, is very nice and the little daily menu food is extremely good and very affordable. It has a very “ tasca ” feeling, including the Porto beloved Francesinha . I loved the roasted beef I had last time.

Restaurant “La Fuente” in Rapperswil

At first one might think this is the wrong place to look for Portuguese food, because yah, we only lost our independence to Spain for a couple of hundred years. But the “Caldo Verde” on the menu and the very nice Portuguese waiter beg to differ. It’s a great place next to the castle, has very nice Spanish and Portuguese specialities, great fish and very nice wines. Pricey, but I find it worth every rappen.

I actually did the research. That specific thread though, was refering to one restaurant only, and title pointing to a single zone in the Kanton.

I think it is a very good idea to include that restaunrant in the list though

Helm, if you feel brave, come to Suisse Romande. There are 1000s of Portuguese here (probably the single largest immigrant population), so there are loads of Portuguese run bars, cafes and restaurants. Having said that, i've never tried any of them. I do know that the Portuguese diaspora in Fribourg have a big shindig on your national holiday. My wife went along with a Portuguese colleague who was leaving and said the food and ambience was excellent.

Can you give me some details on how to get there? Tried to look in Google but found no references to it.

I guess I should really try! The friends I have in Lausanne keep telling me the same. Maybe soon, very soon, I will invade the French part and test the restaurants there ^^ Do you remember the name of the Restaurant your wife tried? Was it good?

Good to have a Portuguese flatmate. He just returned from his holidays bringing sausages, cheese and some liquors along....

The most of them live in Vaud, Geneva and Zürich. Zürich has plenty of portugese shops. You can find Information about Portugese people in Switzerland in this (german) document:

It wasn't a restaurant, it was a Portuguese social club. Also, next to where Fribourg Rugby play their matches is a kind of bowling/skittle alley, but I'm not sure if it's Portuguese or Spanish. Is there a specific form of Portuguses bowling?

Sorry to bring the thread offtopic... but if I have the chance to ask Helm.

I was in holiday in Portugal and ate there some of the best dishes ever .. most of the recipes I could track down, and do them now at home.

But there was one I liked a lot and can't find it.

The dish consisted of grilled squid, cooked in its tint, and some additional ingredients (vegies, herbs?) in the sauce, this together with roasted potato. Divine. If I only knew the name of this dish...

If you know it in Portuguese it's fine, I can then google for the rest.

The best steak in all of Switzerland can be had at a restaurant that although not "Portuguese" in cuisine is owned & run by a Portuguese family. Cafe des Bouchers, in Prilly near Lausanne. It won't win any beauty pageants though!

ETA: Oh. Sorry. I thought they might have pictures you could browse. Most of the recipes don't have pictures. Look for lulas grelhadas in google images. There are some tasty looking dishes!

Another one worth checking is the "Iberica", a combined Spanish & Portugese restaurant on Milchbuckstrasse, next door to the Coop.

If it was cooked with its tint it was probably not "lula" (the common squid) but "choco".

I don't know the recepie myself because it's on of those dishes I unfortunatelly don't enjoy so much because of the tint. I can take a look though, and come back to you with a proper translation!

P.S.: No worries about the off-topic! We still talking about Portuguese food!

There is a good portugese restaurant in Kreis 4, between HB and Langstrasse, it's called Esquina: http://www.esquina.ch/ I've been there once and it was very good, but it's already been a while so no guarantee that it's still going strong.

As others mentioned you're talking about choco, or cuttlefish/sepia. It's very common in portuguese cuisine.

Serve with boiled potatoes. It might look a bit nasty and messy to eat, but it can be quite a delicacy...

Haven't seen any Brazillian restaurants yet. Did see a bar in Zürich, but they were not able to write "cachaça" correctly, so not sure whether it was really Brazillian or just Brazillian themed ... (I'm very, very picky with correct use of ç, ~ and ^)
