I am wondering if the postman delivering packages are required to leave them at the building entrance or bring it to the door.
Our previous postman used to bring packages (recommended) to our door. But the new one just rings the bell, and if you did not make on time there leaves a notice for it be collected at the post office.
So I am not sure if the previous one was too nice or the new one is avoiding work. Anyone knows what the rule is?
According to our mailman, they must bring it to the door of the building, and then you must come down to fetch your parcels.
you go down and get your package. imagine being the mailman walking up stairs the whole day. not only exhausting but also probably halves the number of packages he can deliver per day.
I would rather it was not just left at the door but apparently this depends on whether the sender requests a signature as proof of delivery.
This is a constant issue in our neighborhood.
According to the nice lady at the post office, the package delivery folks are indeed required to bring the package to the door, ring the bell, hand the package to you, and get a signature if necessary.
But they rarely do.
The problem is that package delivery is not done out of the local post, that is, by folks who have a 'buy in' to the community, but rather a regional depot. There is no local accountability for the package delivery guys. They are on a schedule so they simply drop at the street by the mailbox or don't even attempt delivery, just leave a missed delivery notice and drop the truck load at the local post.
The local post has complained countless times. It gets better for a few weeks, but soon the package post guys revert back to sloppy practice. The local post seems as frustrated as we are.
It is generally worse in the summer, when apparently most of the regular staff are on holiday and deliveries are made by temp staff.
I used to complain each time it happened, as I expect several deliveries a week. But I finally gave up, the developing ulcer wasn't worth it, and decided that lousy package delivery service falls into the 'accept the things I cannot change' category. Now I just add stopping by the local post to my list of errands.
If you are made of sterner stuff than I, keep complaining to your local post office, who will forward your complaint to the regional depot. Their comments will carry more weight than those of a mere customer.
Hopefully your regional package depot will be more responsive than ours seems to be.
Not around here, it is definitely out of the local PO, they are loading up their cars as I pass by on my walk to work.
In fact if I am expecting something I ask them if they've got anything for me. Well, I used to ask, now as soon as they see me they say yes or no.

Yet another reason to move to sunny Ticino...
Here the service is also handled by the post office but they don't use cars, just the motorbike with a trailer. Even if the box is large and heavy, they somehow manage to carry it. Sometimes the state of the box is a bit worrisome.
But I don't complain because where we live we have our letters and packages to be posted picked up at our house. We have a special tag supplied by the post office to leave on the letterbox to indicate we have something to post. The post office calls this service "home Service."

We have that service here too. I couldn't work out what it was at first as we just received this plastic thing in our post box one day without any explanation. I figured it was probably similar to the 'flag' system in the US and a bit if googling told me I was right.
Our parcel service is also handled by the local post office but they do use vans as it would take them forever on a bike. Our friendly post lady once asked if it was OK to leave parcels in our little shed and we said no problem and she said if we filled out a form ( which she gave us) and took it to the post office then they would always do that even if it was a different postie unless of course the parcel needed to be signed for. We did that and have never had any issues with our post. It seems to me that the majority of the neighbours did the same as there are frequently parcels sitting on doorsteps or in a porch waiting for the occupants to arrive home.
