Pregnancy on basic health insurance

Hello All!

Being relatively new here, we took out the mandatory health insurance with Assura, which covers us for basic insurance.

Now the fun part starts...I am pregnant!

We applied for a supplementary insurance policy, but they will only cover maternity after 270 days, so it won't help this time round...

Does anyone have any advice for coverage (gynaecologist visits / tests / delivery etc) on basic health insurance?

If basic, i would deliver at the CHUV - Lausanne. I know it is possible even on basic insurance to pay extra for a private room for delivery and after birth, and wanted to know if anyone has any experience?

If we were to pay the price, i could have my wonderful English speaking Gynae, Dr Nesi Seraj, (recommendation for her was found on here, so thank you, you wonderful people!!) and we could choose the Clinic...

Your treatment on Basic insurance will be better than it would on the NHS, I wouldn't worry!

Why can you not have the choice of your gynae under your current insurance? Is it because he/she are in another Canton?

The basic is good coverage for pregnancy. I had supplemental but never used it, but then I did not have a hospital birth and I can see that you might want your own room.

Good luck. You have an exciting time ahead!

Congratulations. Some threads that contain helpful info:

Thanks all!

@ecb, if basic insurance, i will have to have the birth done by a resident doctor at the hospital, at the time of going into Labour. And won't be able to choose that the gynaecologist i am seeing now is in charge of the birth.

We will make an appointment at the hospital from now, to see what is and isn't offered, and continue going to see my gynaecologist up until the birth!

Exciting times ahead indeed

If you have a regular pregnancy then it's unlikely that your gynaecologist would be involved in the delivery procedure at all.

not true, she is a specialist ObGyn, and if we were covered for this birth on private insurance, she would be on call at the time of my due date, and in charge at the time of birth.

It is true. A ObGyn isn't required for a normal delivery and is a waste money and resources.

I'm afraid Porsch is totally right there.

For a normal delivery, the midwives handle all the labour. including delivery.

If you have private insurance, your gyn will pass say hello for the last two minutes to witness the actual delivery, and that's about it.

If you need a c-section, you'll be stone with anaesthetic and you'll have a screen in front of your face, so it's not as if the choice of surgeon really matters.

For my 3 pregancies here (3rd one still not finished ) my own Gyn followed me up to week 36, and then the CHUV handled the last apps and birth.

If you're in Montreux, you can go to Samaritain hospital in Vevey, or to Aigle as well, both with covered with basic insurance.

Definitely true. Midwifes are the folks who attend straight forward deliveries.

All ObGyn's are specialists. I would not count on your "personal" Dr being there anyway even with private insurance, it is not a guaranteed thing to happen. Dr's have holidays and also have more than 1 patient.

Having a baby on basic health insurance is not a problem so I wouldn't worry about it if I was you. I had one baby on private insurance and the other on basic and the level of care was the same with both. I actually preferred the hospital situation with the basic insurance as I shared a room with another mother so had someone to talk to, a private room was actually quite isolating.

Another confirmation that it will be the mid-wives that do the delivery unless anything problematic happens.

We also went with Assura, but in Geneva, and had gynaecologist visits with a recommended gynaecologist up until shortly before the birth, and then the last check and the birth were at the hospital.

We encquired about the idea of paying for private in a clinic like you are thinking, so that our gynaecologist could be "in-charge". The response was that for a normal birth it was something like CHF10,000 but the big risk is if there are complications when you would be liable for serious additional costs which would have otherwise been covered if you were in the cantonal hospital.

In the end we were very happy with the first birth, so much so we went back for another go

Hi Folks

Have a question on pregnancy check ups with Gyne .

https://www.ch.ch/en/pregnancy-health-insurance-covers/

It says :

Paid follow-up check-ups include two ultrasound scans for a normal pregnancy as well as first-trimester screening to test for the risk of trisomies 21, 18 and 13 and non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) if the risk of trisomy is high .

My gyne does ultrasound every 4 weeks , is this normal process ?

Yes and it will be covered

Mrs Porsche also had quite regular ultrasounds (not quite every 4 weeks) and I was confused about insurance coverage. I asked the doctor and she said that the insurance will pay if she feels the scan is necessary...which she does.

This was 2012 so the information could be dated.

It is still like that, if they think a weekly scan is needed insurance will pay for a weekly scan. My wife had a whole bunch of extra scans and basic insurance covers for all of that.

Agree. I had some 10 or more scans with each of my two relatively uncomplicated pregnancies (7 and 2 years ago) and all were covered by basic insurance. If your doctor finds it necessary to perform one (or at least says so in the papers), there will be no issue.

What did Mrs. Porsch have, a Boxster or a Gayman this time ?
