Pregnancy on international insurance

This page on the tradiconsult website indicates that childbirth costs are fully reimbursed so I don't see any reason to actually change insurance.

You will not get any additional coverage by switching to a Swiss insurer since your girlfriend is only eligible for basic.

My insurance is excellent for everything apart from the actual labor. Which is only covered for 8500 euro. The gynae visits are covered to about 3000 euro.

All other aspects have huge coverage. Just this one aspect is rubbish

However, I could have chosen to give birth in FR (Where I live) or DE (Where my Gynae is) But I've stayed in BSL hospital before and it was amazing. As were the staff.

Plus it might not actually be 2000.... It ll probably be less (for a normal Birth) but... I rounded the figures up.

Even for emergency C section my cover is very good.

Just normal birth in a Swiss hospital doesn't quite cover the bill!

I second that!

What works for some people may not work for you, and vice versa.

Another thing to consider is that the extras which you are looking for may be available on the supplementary/ complementary insurance, which you will have to sign up for 3 -5 years.

And finally congratulations to you and your other half.

Thanks everyone!

So, as i figured out - Tradiconsult is going to pay the bills. But after the birth. Its not ok for me to take 25k somewhere and pay hospital and wait for a miracle if tradiconsult will pay (they do not like to pay, 4month of waiting minimum, 80% payment denied).

So, dear forum members, could you please recommend me the way how to cancell tradiconsult insurance and apply for normal one, expensive, that pays, that provide health insurance card etc.?

We found Helsana insurance for newborn, did apply for it. So we think to take insurance for my wife from Helsana too.

What do you think about it?

Thank you!

All Swiss basic insurance has to cover the same things, there is no difference, so just choose the cheapest.

So all the swiss insurance are same **it that their customers have to pay first amounts like 20-30k?

Do you take Tradiconsult insurance by yourself or is it the one that provided by the school for all of their international students?

Does your school has the student insurance advisor?

Tradiconsult was also the insurance that I got when I was a student and it was handled by the school so every international students has the same insurance. We got this insurance advisor in school that handles everything regarding student insurance.

So, if you also has this advisor at your school, contact them and they should know better about the possibility of changing or cancelling the insurance and if not, chasing the insurance company to refund you .

Yes, insurance is provided by my school. But the insurance advisor is not a friendly woman, she says "i will check out" and doing nothing. So its much easier for me to switch to normal insurance, like Helsana, etc.

Could you please recommend what to do if both insurance advisor and insurance company ignore me?

Is it ok to have 2 valid insurance for the same period in Switzerland?

Thank you.

That is very true but the way the reimburse for treatment varies greatly. Some require payment upfront and reimburse later and some can be sent billed directly by the doctor or hospital.

In our case for example the cost of medicines is billed directly by the pharmacy and the the insurer bills us for our 10% share if the cost, hospital bills are treated the same way whereas our GP sends us the bill and we have to send it off to the insurer for reimbursement.

It seems that the OP requires an insurer with the minimum of payment upfront and maximum bill the insurer directly.

He also needs to find out what the procedure is for cancelling his tradiconsult policy. What notice period does he have to give? If it works the same as a regular Swiss health insurance policy then he can only cancel it at the end I'd December ( must send them notice of cancellation to arrive before November 30th ),

Where would you get such a bizzare idea? You pay a monthly premium, and then a franchise or deductible for everything else, up to a certain amount, but it is nowhere near the amount you state. As Belgianmum says, depending on the plan you choose you might need to pay the franchise up front and request reimbursement. But you're looking at maybe 2500 CHF franchise, certainly not 20K. Relax!

But right now it works like i first pay and after send them papers and they think about to pay or not to pay up to a year.

Franchise is always 0 for pregnancy, regardless of the franchise of the policy.

Most Swiss health insurance will reimburse you within a month once you send the bill on to them.

Since you usually have 30 days to pay a doctor's bill if you send the bill to the insurer as soon as you receive it you will usually have the money before you have to actually pay the bill.

Good point, but to clarify...that's only after week 12, right? Thought I read that somewhere before...

with an on-Territory policy, you will not see a bill for childbirth. This may not be the same for an accepted "international" policy as you will likely pay and reclaim. Ergo the authorities since the 1990s have been blocking such policies.

don't talk to the broker, talk to the company. On the phone. And also talk to Jenny. On the phone.

Yes for small bills. My insurance Sanagate works like this, I pay the bill and sanagate pay me back........... HOWEVER for large bills, from say a hospital, the bill gets sent straight to sanagate and they just pay it.

It's 13 weeks but I guess the OP's girlfriend is past that now.

Yes, which is what I said in my earlier post.

Thanks for your replies.

So,

1. My bill wil be sent to insurer (Tradiconsult Student Insurance)?

2. What should we show to doctors when enter the hospital?

3. When can we arrive to hospital? Will they pay to ambulance? How does it work here?

In Russia you just pay to stay in hospital befor pregnancy yourself. Is it possible here?

Thanks!

Your current insurance is not normal basic Swiss health insurance. We are telling you how standard basic insurance works which is what you asked about!

I would suggest cancelling your current insurance and insuring with Helsana like the baby to make things easier!

Try not to call an Ambulance, Swiss health insurance only pays the first 500chf.
