Pregnant and coming to give birth in Zurich

Hi,

I'm so glad I found this forum and hopefully someone can give me some useful information and advice.

I am and currently living in Italy and my partner is living and working in Zurich. We just found out that I am pregnant (yeej) for the first time at 39 years (still very early stage).

Our plan is for me to "close up" in Italy with work ect and do my first tests and check ups in Italy and then come to Zurich around my 4th month and do the rest together with giving birth in Zurich.

We understand that my partner can "sponsor" me as I will not work, and his insurance company said I can be added to his once I am registered.

What do you suggest I start with at this early stage? Look for a Obstetrician / gynaecologist that will follow me?

When the time comes to give birth, how early would you recommend to get in contact with the hospital I choose?

If any other useful detail comes to mind please say. Thank you all in advance

I don't have any suggestions but I wanted to say congratulations.

Yes, welcome and congratulations.

Has your partner got a GP, family doctor? If so, why not register with him/her and ask for a recommendation for an obstetitrician. Always a good idea to ahve a family doctor who has a good working relationship with a colleague.

Congratulations

Usually your doctor registers you with the hospital.

Do you have private/semi-private or obligatory insurance?

Hello, welcome to the forum, and congratulations.

Here's a bumper-thread "I am pregnant - What to expect when expecting in Switzerland", that you might find useful.

See also this thread, which was started when the UK was still in the EU (relevant to you as Italy still is, but more because you're Swedish):

Thank you!

My partner have a obligatory insurance, and I assume if needed we could just upgrade it, we need to ask what is included. I will look in to it!

Thank you, that's good to know. I don't think my partner has picked a doctor yet to be honest, where do you do this?

Thanks a million, I will dig in to some reading now

Congratulations. But I misread your first post. This is what I understood...

Obstetrician / gynaecologist (same thing here) work at specific hospitals, so if you want to choose a hospital you need to choose a doctor who works there.

Tom

Congratulations! If you have general insurance, „your“ ob/gyn won‘t be present at the birth of your baby. In public hospitals, it’s whoever is on duty. But in my experience that was just fine. I‘ve written more about my own experience and that of friends over in the threads that doropfiz mentioned. The bottom line is that what I‘ve seen leaves me a bit skeptical about private hospitals, and very appreciative of „basic“ health care here. For me, what mattered was that there was a large and well-equipped ob/gyn unit and a neonatal ICU in the house - I was almost your age and having the OR next door paid off. In Zurich, that narrows it down to USZ and Triemli.

Zollikerberg as well to my knowledge (not exactly in the city, but close enough)

Usually private/semi-private hospital insurance starts working for giving birth only after 12 months. Otherwise many women would do an upgrade during pregnancy to save costs.
