Professional air quality assesment

Do you know any company which could bring some instruments to measure what is causing me allergy symptoms in my flat?

I can smell some faint smell, which is not constantly around. However the weird part is that what I can smell is most likely the smell of the grass from nearby hill, but I’ve spent a night camping on the hill and it didn’t bother me at all, I woke up completely fresh with no swollen bags around my eyes :person_shrugging: On the contrary, walking the road early morning 4-5 AM the air is cold and with high humidity but there’s some weird smell. I’ve tried to look around if there’s any factory chimney polluting around, but it’s hard to identify any. Surprisingly there are “smokes” coming out from chimneys even though it’s quite hot right now, so it’s not any mazut furnance.

Bottom line, I’d like to know if the source is natural or industrial, with what air purifier appliance I can protect myself, and if it makes any sense at all (if there’s some industrial air poisoning I’d rather move out)

Have you considered having yourself tested for allergies? It might be less complicated.

Have you tried closing the window to see if it is coming from inside our outside the building? Are there any renovation works happening in the building?

That. And when you know what causes it, you can always look at having an air purifier in your bedroom.

Yes, and it’s sorta difficult to tell, that’s why I’m leaning to paying for professionals.

It’s a new building, but 2-5 years old, I don’t know exactly. I did “baking out” method at the beginning of the month but it didn’t change much, though it seems it was better for a few days after the procedure. It might be that some VOCs were lowered by the baking out which made the overall feeling of a progress, but overall the source is still unknown

I’ve been reading about this subject. There are methods of analyzing if x or y substance is in the air, but these are targeted tests. It’s not possible to just take a sample of air and give full analysis. The professionals should have experience in assessing what to test for, and set the instruments accordingly.

Could be Formaldehyde. It is found in just about anything that is new.

My gut feeling is that you are chasing shadows. A flat that old should be free from “new build” problems. Talk to your neighbours. Allergies can be very difficult to tie down and many people think they are allergic to … . It may or may not be the case. There is a limit to what testing of the air or your responses can tell you. With skin tests one can identify a response to well known allergans. Some allergies are non specific i.e. an “irritant” causes a response. This is personal. In my case it seems non specific. After years of being hay-fever free. I now suffer sneezing attacks. Age may be a factor

I agree. Also what people call allergies are mostly just “Überempfindlichkeit” (oversensitivity) as my doctor says. Not less annoying yet not as harmfull and definitely not deadly.
Oh yeah, I too all of a sudden have to deal with hay-fever now. The neighbour’s beautiful hazel bush have since developped a love-hate relationship

@sichuan you live there a few months now, right? Is the problem new or from the start?
What exactly is the problem? The smell that bothers? The swollen bags around the eyes in the morning (yeah, yeah, we all don’t get younger). More things? Did you buy new furniture, curtains, carpets? From China?

Btw. on several days lately I too had this funny smell that came from the outside. Strangely enough when I stepped outside, it was not noticable. It was very unusual - and unpleasant - I put it down on the humidity after the extrem rainfalls while the sun was shining etc. It is interesting you mentioning that now - living a long way from my place.
Also remember you reported those “Tausendfüssler” pilgrimaging to your entrance and dying there. It’s very possible that nature is dealing with a few things we don’t know but influences bahviour and reaction of living creatures (including us).
Before you spend thousands of franks you might give it a little time.

What do the neighbours say?

Though can’t pinpoint to specific specialists, but for sure the matter that shouldn’t be taken lightly as commentators here suggest, it is not just ‘allergies’ suddenly, and what you are used to your ‘allergies’ is also an autoimmune reaction of your body to bad stuff you just choose to ignore, since indeed we are drowning in chemicals all over from food and water. When comes to new houses, all kind of bad engineering/building can lead to problems later on, can be mold all over inside the walls, can be low quality finishing materials and million other problems people share on internet, the same with water (i wish i was less stingy and went for water analysis myself too, just to learn to my horror as those from luzern on the news :D) So yeah hope you find the right guys and share your results here:D

Have you looked at the meteosuiss app? It has displays showing the types of pollen and intensity in your area. Also one for Air Quality.

This will be more difficult than I thought. I’ve identified the source of the smell, but it doesn’t cause the irritation. What causes the irritation seems odorless. This evening when I opened the window I immediately started sneezing and kind of felt it on my face. I thought that I might have a chance to chase the source but there was nothing on street level. I got back to my apartment to check again and still felt it outside my window. I guess that the air moves in layers, hovering above the street level.

Funny that you mentioned building materials. There are buildings under development nearby. It’s far fetching, but maybe the pollution comes from construction site, things like drying cement, or paint.

By the way, anyone know where to buy this https://aeris.irobot.ch/
I’ve been reading about air purifiers. This one looks really good. It’s Swiss made, bought by iRobot. However it looks like they are not selling anymore ??! I’m going to check with them.

Seems to lack an activated carbon filter which is probably what you really need.

Would consider this one instead

Luftreiniger LR 210 | Beurer

Beurer LR 210 - buy at Digitec

Probably gas from your toilet or bath pipe

Didn’t study the product but yes, carbon filter is definitely the thing you need in there.
I have a levoit for years now (small one though), very happy with it. Bought it at amazon where I still get the filters as well.

Btw. bought a Furber last year, it didn’t do a thing. Returned it in the end (service was good though, if only the product had been too).

Thanks a lot for the contribution. I can say that luckily I’m back to normal, woohoo!

It’s been a stressing period, where I started having serious doubts if I can continue living here, but the location is perfect and flat hunting so challenging…

It was not one thing, but a combination of many factors that caused the tipping point to be reached. The number one was the heat! It became much easier to identify things when the temperature dropped.

The thing which awoken the already was this:

But even after the hay was harvested, the situation was still far from good. It was hard to identify anything mostly because of the flowers-grass planted in the nearby roundabout:

it has tiny flowers which give very strong smell

The smell is nice, I admit, certainly it didn’t do any harm to me, but it’s so strong that the winds carry it along the main street up to dorfmatt (train station). Btw, now it’s almost over, it seems the rain destroyed it.

So I mentioned the heat, why? The windows are white inside, but dark outside. What could go wrong? The afternoon sun can heat it up outside enormously. The air starts to be a bit dense inside, within 1 m proximity to the windows, but outside it’s a disaster. The heat must have already worn out the rubbery seal. It got finger sticky, and I’ve read it’s time to replace it. I mounted thermometer on the glass and kept sun away pulling down the blinders the moment sun approaches the windows. The temp still went up to 39 degrees, but the metal wasn’t almost finger burning like the day before, was just warm, so I guess normally the window was heated up ~55 or more.

Next I finally found the smoke. The horrible smell appears at random times, day and night, for a very short burst, but it could linger on the street for 10 min or so. It’s this building

so close, caught it in the morning from the church hill

the smoke lasted about a minute only when I got there, an certainly the smell was around when I went back to make the picture of the building.

Next, I removed a TV furniture as it seemed a bit over polluting with formaldehyde.

Lastly, when the whole building finally cooled down, I indeed found another pollutant in my flat. Over the years I’ve been so swissified that I keep the dumb routine of cleaning the washing machine pump filter after each use. That’s a big issue. The water pump acts as a siphon, if you release the water the drum stays wide open to the sewage pipes. I’ll remember to always pour a cup or two of water inside after cleaning the pump.

In retrospective, it’s clear that all the problems exaggerated when the heat wave came. Normally, I’ve been living with closed windows as the building has the internal air ventilation. I cannot adjust the ventilation efficiency and it wasn’t enough when the problems starting to accumulate. Opening windows was good aid at first (despite the noise) but it was a Pandora’s box.

Sooo now I’m literally back to normal. The ventilation is enough so I have my windows closed and no issues whatsoever.

PS. regarding the aeris air purifier, it’s discontinued. I was considering it because it has been designed with a choice of filters, the gas filter was pricey but was supposed to be one of the best on the market. I’ve bought levoit 200S instead with similar filter choice. It’s a really nice device. One caveat though, from my tests I conclude that it doesn’t have any gas odor sensor, so in auto mode it’ll stay low no matter what’s the gas pollution.

PS 2. I’ve passed through a cloud of the chimney smoke today on my way to shop, but in a moment I realized that I didn’t care about the fact at all.

Sounds like you did a lot of research and now that you’re okay again, you’re none the wiser. I know the feeling.

Is that lavender?

I have no idea what flower it is. It was out of my radar, as my task was “what makes me sick”. Sure, it’s funny how easy it’s to jump to conclusion, the smell appeared and I started feeling sick.

However I do recognize the name Lavender. Now it’s clear why it covered up almost any other smell.
