Programs in English?

As many of you know, I just arrived to Switzerland. I find sometimes programs in english but the next time i find them, are in french or german? What can I do to always get them in english? Or to switch the language? I have pressed all buttoms of the remote control and nothing.

Thanks!!

By the way, i have like the basic cable (33 channels or so)

A lot, but not all, of TV programs in Europe are broadcast in multiple languages.

A lot, but not all, of TV receivers have the ability to receive and select between the multiple languages.

With the old analog TVs there is a maximum of 2 languages that can be transmitted, and the 'main' or 'A' language is often the local language in the area of broadcast.

The 'second' or 'sub' or 'B' language is often the original language of the TV program.

So look in the TV guide, which identifies if a program is available in multiple languages, and then look in your TV manual to determine what button on your remote is used to select between language A and language B.

The ability to broadcast in multiple languages is determined by the TV station, and some TV stations use it more than others.

Eg: SF2 does a lot more multi-language broadcasts than SF1 does, and RTL appears to do none.

I have noticed over the last few months that a couple of the French and Italien channels are broadcasting shows like CSI in original version. Can't be specific but if you receive any channels from France or Italy, it may be worth surfing these channels between 8 and 10 Monday to Friday.

This also depends on the area of Switzerland you are living in. Not all channels are dual language everywhere.

Is your TV able to receive stereo signals?(bi-canal)

I watched a few episodes of CSI on a Greek channel in English recently....

When I used to watch TV, I could look at the TV program listing and look for a little icon that indicates dual channel sound. My set was set to always go for the original language if there was one. CSI was often broadcast like this on the Swiss Italian (TSI) and Swiss French (SRG or whatever its called now).

But these days those series can also be downloaded...

I have found that when living in zürich and basel (using cablecom) you can switch to English using the 'info' button on their remote. BUT (like many said) only certain channels and not all English language shows on these channels will change. I have only found the swiss channels to switch..SF. TSR and TSI (german, french and italian).

As you live in Suisse Romande, you should buy the Matin de dimanche on Sundays enclosed is a TV magazine for the following week listing alll the cable channels that you have plus a few more (BBC prime included). Next to every broadcast are icons indicating what each transmission includes ie Dual language and or subtitles (TXt page 777) the dual language icon is clearly marked as 1-2 . On your TV you need to find a button that either has a

I/II or A\B or if your TV doesn't have that then look for the same sign on your video player and select the language through that. If you don't have any of those buttons then it's time to buy a new TV.

Another place to look is the Swiss French station TSR web page that summarizes many of the Swiss stations (SF1, SF2, TSI1, TSI2, TSR1, TSR2) and some other French stations. The grid shows each station's programming for the next seven days. It uses "Bicanal FR/EN" to signify shows that are broadcast in dual language. (Note that this may be confusing, as it will list FR/EN even for a show on, say, TSI1, that really is broadcast in Italian and English.)

You can click on many of the shows to get more information (in French), such as a synopsis of a movie, or a TV episode.

As an example, suppose you wanted to know what's on the Italian station TSI2 this Sunday, June 1st. Click on the TSI2 icon and then "dimanche 1" and you will see that TSI2 is showing 3 episodes of the series Kidnapped from 21.40 until 23.10 in English (and Italian).
