I started work in July 2007 and my OH is also EU national and both our resident ́s applications were done through our employers. I am quite certain that there is a form that your employer has to fill out, that you will need to get your resident ́s permit. Have you contacted your Gemeinde? They can probably send you these forms. I don ́t think it ́s something to get too stressed over as you can probably sort everything out when you come, but it may make things a little easier for the apartment hunt, to have a letter saying that your resident ́s application has been approved (and this can be done BEFORE you arrive in CH), even if you don ́t have the actual permit in hand (this you will get when you register). As it can take several months for approval to be granted (even though it ́s a formality) the sooner you start the process the better IMO (my OH is waiting 2 months now or so) and without your resident ́s permit you won ́t be able to do some things like get a mobile phone contract etc..
From our experience when we popped over for a short visit to find an apartment before moving, the fact that we were not already resident in CH was a big turn off (even with the letter from employer etc,). You may have more luck finding something to tide you over for the 1st 2 months and then making applications for apartments once you ́re here.
