Provisional License Exchange

I had been doing my driving license in the uk and had passed my theory and had been taking lessons, now that im in switzerland i wanted to know if its possible to just exchange my uk provisional for a swiss provisional? or do I have to start again here and re do theory, first aid, etc?

Thanks in advance.

Sam

Sorry, but you have to start again. They will only exchange full licenses. And at that, to get the full full Swiss licence you have to have passed your UK test over 3 years ago.

Now you can look forward to the first aid training, the Swiss theory test, the traffic school and then to the actual test. After you pass that you have 3 years provisional driving before you're a fully qualified driver permitted to accompany another learner driver.

I'm at the taking lessons/preparing for traffic school stage myself so I know it's a long drawn-out and expensive process!

Bummer that I can't change over my NZ provisional license then! My German isn't good enough... I think it'll take me a whole month to get through understanding the entire theory book... let alone take traffic lessons and the theory exam

My husband has a NZ full license but didn't think to change over his license earlier and now he will have to take a practical exam to change his license... he may have to take the first aid course too.

But there is no actual Swiss provisional license right? You can drive right away... just can't accompany another learner. NZ provisional licenses require that you can't drive between 10pm and 7am, and can't take any passengers (that was when I left the country of course... it may have changed since then).

No. There is a provisional licence and you can only drive if accompanied by someone with a full licence. Also not on motorways until your instructor deems you sufficiently experienced.

Baboon, did you mean a learner's license? Where you've completed the theory test and first aid etc and would now be learning to drive?

By provisional license I meant after passing the practical exam is there a provisional time period (in NZ I believe it was normally 18 months), during which you may drive without an instructor or a person with a full license but you may not take other passengers and you may only drive during the regulated hours, before you acquire a full drivers license.

Sorry if I'm a little confused. I'm still working my way through all the threads on getting a license.

Aha - yes. Called provisional licences in the UK but what you mean by a learners licence.

The Swiss licence is now provisional for 3 years (at least for younger drivers, not sure about age limits) after you get it and in that time you have to visit 2 full day driving courses. However there are no restrictions on passengers or times etc. However if you pick up too many or too bad infractions in that time you can loose the licence completely.
