Public schooling- kindergarten

Hello

We are relatively new to Zurich and my daughter will be starting kindergarten this August. I have got the school allotment. What preparations do I need to make before she starts school? Should I send books, stationeries etc for her school? I have no idea what the system requires. Any inputs is much appreciated.

you need to buy slippers for in the class room, clothes for gymnastics, a school bag, a lunch box and a bottle.

i think that's about it.

Books stationary? It is Kindergarten.

You will get a letter explaining what you will need. The most important piece is the "Chindsgitäschli" (Kindergarten-Bag) (see https://www.google.ch/search?q=chindsgit%C3%A4schli ) where each day you put in a healthy "Znüni" (Nine-o-clock snack). What is considered as "healthy" should also be outlined in the letter. I think bananas are not so kindly seen.

Other stuff you will need: House slippers, small gym bag, gym cloths, maybe a rain suit, toothbrush, and an apron or old button up shirt which will be used for painting and arts.

Not sure about your particular teacher/school protocol, but the 1st school day all the kids here get an itemized list with things to buy. Slippers, apron, gym stuff (clothes plus gymnastics shoes), box of markers, box of crayons, scisors, ruler, glue stick, sharpener, eraser, a plastic cover for their desk for art classes, a pillow to sit on for reading times...can't remember what else.

Otherwise - a drinking bottle, tupperware for snacks, etc..optional things. My kid has a handsanitizer, tissues and sunscreen in her school bag but that's probably too early to count on your little one to actually use it.

Thanks. Gymnastic clothes? meaning shorts and tshirts with sport shoes?

And how do we label them?

All this stuff is provided in schools in Canton Zurich. Maybe not the pillow for sitting but I'd advise the OP to wait for the start of term to see if that's needed.

Indoor shoes are usually the non-marking variety but mainly these

I used these labels. They're not the cheapest option (you could just marker-pen everything with their name) but they're really cool.

Uhmmm...I know you need advice, but not for every minor detail? There's no rule sometimes

Buy a permanent marker, write your kid's name, innitials, or whatever you like in the tag inside the garment. I packed leggins and short sleeve tshirt, simple drawstring gym bag. I also used special iron-on embroidered name tags I ordered when my kid was born. Shoes - those were special gymnastics shoes (for rhythmics they call those here). Regular sport shoes come later.

SG - yep, I know there are differences in cantons..I was surprised at first, because here we pretty much supply all, but kids do a lot of visits/field trips/excursions/skating/overnight camps even and parents do not have to finance that at all or very little. Extracurricular sports are also almost free, just admin fee.

The OP is asking about kindergarten.

Oh for field trips, you need also a Swiss army knife:

Indeed - ecole infantine, oder? At 4 years of age? 4 day school camp, jebus. They were happy as a clam - parents at home did not sleep.

I know. I got my pocket knife at 5. So did my girl.
