Hello everybody.
I know there are lots of threads about schools and I apologize in advance if I am being repetitive, but I haven't been able to find anything about public schools in and around Lugano.
In particular, I would appreciate to hear if someone knows of any good primary schools in Ticino not only from an academic point of view, but also schools which are welcoming to foreign kids, good teachers/principal, nice facilities (ie. playground, gym, library etc).
I have contacted a few International Schools and the waiting list is very long.
I will be working in Bioggio starting in November (yes, very short time to get settled!) and have a 8 year old son who is currently in grade 3 and who is fluent in spoken Italian (writing/reading not as much). I am still looking for a place to rent but - ideally - would like to find it close to the school rather than the other way round like I understand it happens in Switzerland. I am planning to eventually get a car to commute to work so I don't mind living in a family friendly town/village outside Bioggio/Lugano.
Thank you in advance for your help.
by public school you mean public private school or public state school?
I meant public state schools. Thanks.
The one in Bioggio is fine.
Tom
The school program of Canton Ticino for public schools is the same for all schools. So in a way there are all quite similar. At the end there are other factors that you may not know in advance: teacher, classmates, etc. What I would look at though is if you both work, then you may need services like canteen, afterschool, and not all schools have that. I would also check whether there are activities like swimming lessons, skiing week, green week. And finally, many kids do extracurricular activities, like sports, so you may want to stay in an area where you don't have to spend a lot of time reaching those.
Thank you Asatarai,
You have very good points and those are exactly the criterias I followed to choose the school for my son. I finally opted for the school in Bioggio. The principal is really nice and the school looks nice overall with a great lunch and after school program. My son will start in November, so hopefully it was the best choice.
Thank you again.
Thank you Tom. That is the school I chose for my son. Let's hope for the best.
PS: I still haven't figured out the "thank you" button
