OP is Austrian, I am not sure if she meant private schools when she said public, let her be more specific.
Thanks!
It is also possible to choose yourself, for example if you have parascolaire (the after school day care) creche in a different area and want to keep the kiddo in the same creche, or work somewhere where it is easier to be near your kids, etc. or have buddies that want to go to the same class together.
I have heard some criticism about public schooling, too, but it usually does not mean the entire school, the complaints would be about certain teachers. It does not mean your child is bound to have the same troubles, teachers' reactions, or anything. I have also heard of parents switching from one teacher to another, in certain conditions, everything is possible. If going to a different school than the one in your catchment area means serious logistic hustle, I would give it a try. Working in a public school myself, in the area and a very good one, I must say parents haven't figure out a collective complaint, yet. There are ways to make a teacher work better. If you get stuck with a bad one, it does not mean there is no way out. The edu system is changing very fast, it is set to be a lot more flexible especially in our region, La Cote is so international, that even public schools have more foreign kids than local ones.
If you don't speak French, I would start learning. Good luck with school system here, hope you get some good answers from our regional members.
