Pumpkin Pie

Hiya, does anyone know where I might buy tinned pumpkin in Zurich? Or a whole pumpkin... I think it might be a bit late in the season for that. Last year I had to buy some little slices from Jemoli and make up the difference with sweet potatoes. I'm on pie-duty again for next week and panicking cause I haven't done my homework - please help!

I'm sure Co-op had tinned pumpkin last year but fresh ones should still be around somewhere, they're not too difficult to miss

Try one of the markets (Bürkliplatz Tuesday/Friday mornings and Oerlikon Wednesday/Saturday mornings). They're bound to still have them there, and FRESH!

dear tonyasam

the farmer across the road still has a whole selection of pumpkin - all sizes and kinds imaginable - but i'm in mellingen, near baden - about 45mins from zurich by train...

Globus has it.

Al the supermqarkets still have pumpkins. Well they did in Affoltern today anyway!

Coop, migros and try the farms my next door neighbours parents have a farm and they still have nice big ones for sale, sorry not near you, but i think lots have farms will have some left.

Thanks everyone, I'll be a happy shopper tomorrow!

Cheers,

Sam

Goodluck and i hope you find 1, please let us know if and where you found 1 in the end.

Just remember, big pumpkins DO NOT make pumpkin pie!!! They are for carving only.

If going the fresh route, you need 'sugar pumpkins'. They are smallish, about 1-1.5 kg and a DARK orange color which is often flecked. Kind of looks like baked pumpkin pie itself. I have not been able to find sugar pumpkins since early Oct. (IF you do find them, you can freeze the puree and it keeps for 6 months.)

If you eat the other ones, you will regret it! I ended up shelling out at the American store for canned pumpkin.

Thank you - I had no idea!

Ok, no tinned pumpkin to be found in Jemoli, Globus, Migros, Coop or Aldi but I DID find some cute little pie-type-pumpkins at the Regensdorf Migros. Have just steamed one, it is a lovely texture and a brilliant orange. Thanks for all the help, will let you know how the pie turns out!

For the last few weeks I have been walking by fields of pumpkins and farms with pumpkins for sale.

I have stopped admired and read their names and marveled at their various sizes colours and shapes.

I really want to buy one and take it home but rather than allowing it to follow the natural or usual life cycle in our non cooking household ie. death by slow decay and neglect. I would like to find a recipe that would save a future Pumpkin from this fate.

I have a sweet tooth which why this Pumpkin Pie thread looked like a good place to start.

Guess I will have to do with Pumpkin soup

I can add cream that should make it sweet
