Quad Bikes

Does anyone know if you can ride a quad bike with car licence since it has 4 wheels? I am really interested in buying one but do not have motorbike licence

They're category B1 so both the regular cat. B license and the limited B1 subcategory license are fine.

Apparently it's also allowed to drive them only with motorbike licenses but I don't understand which license is usually required. A unlimited/limited/A1 Maybe it depends on the individual quad's specs.

There is no such thing as a Quad Bike. Quad = Four. Bi = Two. Bike is a shortened version of Bicycle.

They should correctly be referred to as Quadricycles.

I know I am being fussy, but it is just one of those silly things that bugs me

The legislation depends on the weight of the vehicle. There are also car-like vehicles that are classified as quadricycles e.g. Aixam

No matter what license you need, make sure you get proper instruction before you hit the road. The driving physics are tricky and many people (my neighbour included) have ended up in the ditch, in hospital or worse.

I fail to see the point of quad bikes/quadricycles. They are dangerous, appear to have all the disadvantages of a motor cycle - you get wet and are easily killed - without the advantages of small width, manoeuvrability and cornering.

Oh, and finally people look prize dorks riding the things - as if they can't balance a two-wheeler...

I wouldn't ride one - they are tooooo dangerous....

We have many deaths in Australia each year due to roll-overs...

And plenty of near-misses, permanent head injuries and broken bones.

They roll over too easily, are heavy, and there is no roll-cage...

Are you talking about a motorized quad or a pedal-powered quad? My understanding on the pedal-powered versions is that they just have to be smaller than 1m wide (i.e. ZEM's version, www.zem.ch , but they are out of business) with pedals for everyone.

For the motorized versions, the advice given here above is very sound.

Good morning guys,

I am thinking about buying an ATV/quad. I live in Urdorf (near Zurich). Do you know maybe some places where I could actually drive ATV, off the road? Also is anybody maybe from the area which regularly drives ATV? Are there some groups or clubs?

Also if I have UK driving license will it be legal to drive ATV/quad in Switzerland? (I am planning to exchange my license to Swiss license)

Thanks
