Question about Internet providers

I need Internet for my house and my budget is around 40 CHF/month.

Right now, in the meantime, I get the internet from my neighbour (we have an agreement, I pay 30 CHF/month). He uses Swisscom and said he has the super fast 1 GB Swisscom package ( ADSL Cable) and pays more than 100CH but when I did the internet speed test the results are:

Download: 10.49 mbp

Upload: 1.06 mbps

so,...?...not sure about that.

In any case, I mention it ́cause that speed works fine for me at the moment, I just want to have total independence from him ́cause I noticed he is a bit..."dodgy" let ́s say.

So, i was looking at my options, and it ́s all a bit confusing as always, choosing a provider without much reference.

I found a upc-cablecom package called "Internet 20" that offers up to 20 mbit/s download and up to 2 mbit/s upload speed for 45CHF (still ok), which sound good considering I have half that speed now.

Now, i read a lot of reviews here and in other websites and opinions are very divided about this company (they sound so good! they even offer free Wifi around Switzerland for their customers! too good to be true?), some reviews here in the forum are from 2011, so I wanted to check with you now, know how is it going and hear about your experiences or any advice, I ́m open to any company really, I don ́t have any preference. I should just mention, for anyone willing to give me ahand with this, that i ́m not interested in having any TV service or fixed telephone line or anything like that, only Internet.

I also tried 2 websites someone mentioned here: tempobox.ch and comparis.ch, both very useful, but i ́d still like to hear a little from you all, i notice there are people with a lot of experience on this things in this forum and since I ́ve only be here in Switzerland for less than a year I ́m still not that familiarized with companies locally.

Cablecom's hardware is terrible. Their router is flaky and keeps refusing to give IP addresses to devices and Cablecom "can't find a problem".

Indeed. You have to be extremely careful here. If he is questioned about the downloading of 'unconventional' content, he might just remark, in his defence, that other people have access to his internet connection.

Cablecom have decent speeds, and the speed they advertise is what you get. Second the fact that their hardware is terrible, especially the horizon box. But you're not bothered with that box at that tariff and one can always use an extra router to bypass a crappy box.

However , something one often misses in the Cablecom smallprint is that they charge two fees: one for the service provided and one for providing a connection to your house on which they provide said service. They advertise the first fee, the second fee is hidden in small print.

Said second fee is about 30chuffs per month and comes with 2mb internet included and some free tv channels and telephone service, and no hardware. On top of that you'll add your 40chuffs for 20mb internet service. So you'll end up with a 70-odd monthly bill.

P.S. Cablecom offer a quite generous switching bonus (100chuffs for internet, more for full service) so you could take that into account when doing the numbers...

Since your in or around Sion, your local telereseau operator http://www.esr.ch have their own combo offer, although the speeds don't look brilliant in 2015. Advantages? Well you're not dealing with UPC Cablecom for support... Hopefully it's a local callcenter. Worth considering anyway, especially if your building have a fibre connection (then it might be much more interesting!).

They don't charge the extra fee on a package, so the cheapest current option is the Mini Combi:

Sorry but packages are not excluded from the extra charge, see the small print:

"Requires a 3-in-1 cable connection with feedback channel from upc cablecom or one of our partner networks. The costs for this connection (usually CHF 29.95/month) are normally covered by the ancillary costs in rented apartments."

So total cost would be ~70chf/month. Whether the connection cost is part of the rental maintenance fees is irrelevant, as the tenant is still paying for them in most cases.

Yes they do! Read the small print at the bottom of the page:

"Voraussetzung ist ein rückwegtauglicher 3-in-1 Kabelanschluss von upc cablecom oder einem unserer Partnernetze. Die Kosten für diesen Anschluss (in der Regel CHF 29.95/Mt.) sind bei Mietwohnungen meistens in den Nebenkosten enthalten."

This means: You do need an open Cablecom plug in your appartment. The cost for this (usually CHF 29.95) are commonly included in the rent (Nebenkosten/frais accessoires/charges annexes) that you pay to your landlord (Verwaltung/regie).

So, basically, you pay around CHF 30.- per month with your rent (just for having the open plug) PLUS the CHF 39.- for the offer. So about CHF 69.- altogether!

On the other hand, if you have an open UPC cablecom plug, but you don't need it (because you don't use their TV, phone or internet services), then be sure to have it inactivated ("plombieren"), and you can save CHF 30.- per month on your rent!

@OP: Do you have a landline (Fixnet) phone in your home?

There are ADSL (or ADSL + phone) offers where you don't need to pay the Swisscom CHF 25.35 per month basic fee, e.g. from Sunrise (from CHF 40.00 for ADSL + phone) or M-Budget (from CHF 54.80 for just ADSL or CHF 59.80 for ADSL + phone).

Take in account that Swisscom has a cancellation period of 2 months. (Maybe you can leave quicker if you pay some fee.)

That offer (fast 250/25 MB internet for CHF 75.- per month) is only available in buildings with glass fiber connections.

Plus, what you see in the picture is not classical cleavage . It's called underboob .

Usually the speed reported is the speed you get when you are plugged in. On WiFi, it will be much lower. So yes, he might be paying for what he says, although 10 mbps does sound a bit low...

I was wondering if anyone uses Migros Internet? I heard it's available, but haven't heard more than that.

If you do use it, can you provide any feedback? Speed, quality of service, etc?

AFAIK, the "Migros Internet" (M-Budget) is just a resold Swisscom-package.

Can you get FTTH to you place?
