Questions about moving to Geneva

It's really surprising to me that the UN proper handles the specifics of shipping, I wasn't aware of that. At any rate my advice applies to the original poster as TGF is administered by WHO, which does not help with finding a shipping company.

Another thing to consider is the type of contract. There are several types of contracts with different resettlement provisions.

Your original advice referred to international organisations in general rather than the Global Fund. As always, devil is in the detail

Another question - does anyone have a recommendation for a temporary apartment in Geneva for my husband and I to stay in while we are searching for an apartment? My employer helps w/the cost but doesn't find one for us. They recommended Residence Mont-Blanc, but I wasn't sure if that was a good one....and wanted a few others to look into in the event they are booked too!

Looks like we are coming over on July 15th!!!

Hi,

I am sure that I already posted some of these links before, but since I am at the moment too lazy to search the forum, here they are again:

http://www.studiohouse.ch/ much cheaper than Mont Blanc but also much less luxurious, we stayed there before finding a flat

http://www.residencedizerens.ch/ this place was recommended by a colleague but it was some 6-7 years ago

Aargh...a lot of places are booked. Summer must be busy. I found availability at Hotel Central (2, rue la Rôtisserie ). Has anyone in Geneva heard of this place? Is it nice, trashy, middle of the road??? It's hard to tell from the website.

The location is amazing, and if you look for them on TripAdvisor you'll see that they have mostly positive reviews with one or two whiners.

Your commute should be about 30 minutes if you walk to the station and get the train to the airport, then walk to TGF. I could probably do it in about 20 minutes by bicycle, but 30 minutes is more likely.

Thank you Mark. this is not my day...the person at Hotel Central just responded to my fax saying his coworker "messed up"...they have no availability until Aug 1st (we're arriving July 17th). So...back to square one. He recommended Bel'Esperance?? Is it nice? From the website it looks like they are only hotel rooms and very limited internet. This is getting frustrating!

Nevermind...they are booked too. Am now starting to get worried we will not be able to find a temporary apartment....hotel is last resort as it will not have a kitchen.

This agency rents furnished flats but only on a monthly basis and they are far from cheap. They are very well furnished, comfortable and centrally located and they have I think some availabilities from 15 July: http://www.homesweethome.ch/

Hi there and welcome to your new to be home

There is one company I will NOT recommend in Geneva (Active Relocation), they charged about 5600 CHF to only find a flat. I did not need any of the other services (open banks, credit card, schools etc) but they still charged me the full amount, and I did not know any better.

For that price I was shown 5 apartments and was "pressured" to take some of of what I was shown but I refused. The one I finally took was a flat unlisted (just because they knew someone on the rental agency), so in that case you get some perks. I was happy with the place I got, but then I had a list of loose ends to be done on the flat (ie, no spare keys, locks not working properly) and it is almost like their entire attitude just changed. "not our problem anymore", I finally refused to pay the remaining balance UNTIL until every single item was fixed on the list.
