Quiet hours....

Hi all,

Is there any details or specification on what can be expected during quiet hours?

It's clear no loud music or screaming or banging walls is allowed but what about walking and talking, being awake in general after 10 pm?

I would like to stick to the quiet hours requirements of course but I will not go to bed at 10pm and want to know if I have rights to circulate in my house with no shoes and speak on normal voice levels...

May be someone can help?

Thanks!!!

You can be awake as long as you don't disturb anyone.

I think it's written in Swiss law that during quiet time, any noise above 10dB (the volume of normal breathing) is strictly NOT allowed. Get yourself a sound level meter or you'll be looking at a hefty fine one of these days!

Normal household noise is ok. And despite other opinions, the normal sound of children playing and going about their usual activities, is unlikely to bring the attention of the local police...who have much better things to do...

This isn't Germany. You can make as much noise as you want, as long as your neighbours are OK with it. If you haven't already, go and be nice to them.

10dB, your joking sound studios are usually soundproofed to 20dB which is pretty much silence.

This forum is a veritable gold mine of hilarious expat myths. Love it!

Think u missed the sarcasm

No screaming or loud moaning while having sex.

Does that mean I can scream and loudly moan other times?

No, what do you mean? That absolutely was NOT a joke!

Dan

that is anyway only allowed between 8-20hr on Monday and Thursday.

That's ridiculous. Everyone knows a corpse decomposes at 27.5 dB.

10 dB is not possible if there is a fridge in your apartment, that will be roughly 30 dB maybe more

It doesn't matter. As we all know, the rules are the rules, and must be followed, even when it doesn't make sense, or is impossible.

Dan

So... whats the definition of "sounds reduced to a minimum" does walking and talking count? Where is this defined??

It's not really defined anywhere. It's just common-sense. If it's loud and constant and it's late evening, and it would piss you off, it's probably going to piss other people off, too.

In your contract it probably gives a guideline of activities to avoid after 10pm, but it's not rocket science.

If you smile sweetly at your neighbours, and show yourself to be a model citizen, they'll overlook any amount of crashing and banging at three o'clock in the morning. Particularly true when it's Fastnacht: three o'clock is a perfectly reasonably time to get up and make breakfast.

Doesn't quite work like that here. I have tried... It's mostly walking and speaking, no playing kids, music or shoes that's why I would like to dig a lil bit deeper and find out what's within the regulations

Not sure that the regulations will help you much. One man's obstreperous stranger is another man's sociable neighbour.
