If the ranking is about proven medical mistakes, then the criterias are objectives in a juridical sense. Better than nothing. Otherwise, "GP's performance" sounds a dodgy concept to me.
Can you imagine rich doctors employing rich lawyers to sue poor people like me, writing that my Doctor is crap? Easy money!
The health insurance companies will also not advise you which is the best. Maybe if nobody is listening, an insurance employee will give you a personal recommendation.
The work done by doctors is valued using their points system Tarmed, so a 15 minute interview might be 15 points. An injection by a nurse maybe 7 points. An X-Ray (Using the film and the expensive equipment) might be 43 points, etc etc.
The amount the doctors can claim for each point depends on their qualities, junior or senior, regular or specialist.
In Switzerland most health insurance companies will charge you a lower rate if you use the HMO or group medical practices. You should ask your health company which ones they use. The HMO rates are kept low by only charging the higher rates for specialist work, when done by specialist doctors.
Thus if you go to a rheumatoid specialist for a bad cough, he can charge you a lot more than if you went to a general practitioner. So the HMO practices charge less, and you get to keep some of the savings.
When using www.comparis.ch there are several options for Insurance, Versicherungsmodelle Standard Hausarzt HMO Telmed
With Visana you can choose HMO straight away and see the benefits quickly, in my case CHF 89,20 per month! (CHF 446.40 minus CHF 357.20)
So this doctor would charge normal rates,
Dr. med. médecin généraliste
Route de Chavannes 211, 1000 Lausanne.
and this doctor the higher specialist rates,
Dr. med. spéc. FMH en médecine interne,
infectiologie et médecine tropicale
Avenue de Rumine 9, 1005 Lausanne
On the other hand I was far more happy with Universitet Spital Zürich, Kantonspital Zug and Kinderspital Luzern. I had feeling the doctors are more experienced, answer all question and the treatments were always effective.
I would not recommend those doctors in Zug: Dermatolog Dr. Urs Hasse, Augenarzt Dr. Beat Weber (my personal experience with wrong diagnose/treatment).
If you have a case, get a lawyer and do the right thing.
I am shocked.
The problem is that the best doctors - especially surgeons - will attract the worst and most difficult cases, and will then also be more likely to use experimental techniques (and I don't mean this in a negative way). This tripple whammy means that the best doctors could actually end up with the worst rankings.
As per the first reply, any advice about good/bad doctors is going to be from word of mouth and personal experiences - which as ever will vary depending on personal preference.
I am very disappointed when a doctor can not see the simple things (in both cases it was really obvious for qualified doctor). And when a doctor asks me: Do you want antibiotics or not? I think it's a doctor who should answer this question. However, after treatment with antibiotics (from doctors prescription) my problem was not solved. I tried anti allergy drops which you can get in pharmacy without prescription and Oh miracle! it worked! I can not trust a doctor who can not define virus from allergy.
Go by your gutt feeling but do not present it as incompetence. We all agree that you were telling about your two experiences, so let us all keep it clearly like it in the wording... unlike your other message.
They take their time, explain everything you need to know or want to know.
My GP is very open mind and will listen my opinions and ideas. Of course he takes is time, he charges for that time. But he use this time wisely and go deep into the problem.
My dermatologist is also very good, but what a smart ass. I don't like him for that. This is a very common attitude with doctors, you just have to keep looking until you find one who will fit with you!
By the way, I do my homework before I go to see a doctor. Nowadays we have the internet and all the info we want at 1 click away. So I do look around and search. When I see my doctor, I can tell him what I think, what I found and I can give him a better ideas of my general wellness including symptomes, etc.
Whilst there are rogue practitioners out there, generally all the doctors I've come across (especially here in Switzerland), have been nothing but professional and highly competant. All it takes is for one unhappy patient to give him a bad review and his / her years of hard work in medical school - people form opinions, stay away and the practice is down the drain.
EDIT: The info is NOT up to date, like addresses and phone numbers, just in case someone wants to make an appointment using the website...sorry had to say it
By the way, I know several people (also Swiss) who are not happy with doctors. Maybe it's really bad luck...maybe not...
Wish good health everyone!
Swiss doctors are fantastic IMHO. Never had a bad one (decades here), they treat me and my kids with respect and listen to all of us, don't over prescribe, offer sensible choices etc . If you have any doubts about your doctor just go to another. A GP here is very highly qualified. If you don't like his or her personality then choose another one. Don't bash them all as a result. The training, their access to technology, the availability of drugs ....
Best medical system in the world - personal opinion, based on much illness in family, and timely life saving diagnosis and treatment. Best place in world to have a baby too.
My ranking of the various systems that I know:
1. CH
2. Aust
3. UK
4. USA due to complexity in getting the necessary tests and waiting periods, and legal stuff. I prefer a one stop shop where the doc can do blood work, x rays, ultrasound, EKG ... everything without sending you elsewhere or making you wait weeks. Regardless of whether you are private or not. Which is what you get here, even Allgemein (basic) insured people, which is the lowest and cheapest level of insurance (there is no such thing as "not insured" here, which is the unfortunate case for many in the USA.)
And if you're not getting that? Then change doctors, because that is what you can and should be getting here.
I wonder if the bad experiences were due to communication problems? Most speak great English ...many did part of their training abroad ... If not yours then switch. You need to be able to explain your symptoms. I cannot think, let alone speak German when I'm ill. ( or getting my hair done ...).
Ranking doctors is absurd.
They're all good. Try one.
