RAV and hourly consulting work

Hi all,

So I’m about to go on RAV next month, still need to register - I have not been on RAV before.

I am interviewing for some remote hourly consulting work for a company based out of NL. It would only be about 20 hours per week of work, but they are willing to pay local Swiss wages, so not entirely a bad prospect. They would need me for an expected 6 months ...

I’m so new to all this as I’ve also never been a consultant before - of course this work would not be enough financially, but it would keep my head in the game / provide more experience while I am looking for full time work. Would RAV still support me a bit financially for the rest of the income I would be missing? A colleague had mentioned to me they would, but just looking for more guidance from all you consulting experts on here.

Thanks a lot!

The RAV is very encouraging of any work you do, although a regular 20 hour gig might be seen as you being back in employment?

They have a form you can complete with the hours of work you do and it actually raises the total monthly payment limit.

You will likely still have to fulfil the quota of job applications / job search whatever.

Things may be a bit different in Bern than in Zurich, of course, but that's just my experience.

I mean I wouldn’t want to take work if I would get paid less than my RAV ... so

I hope they would still help somehow.

Happy to fulfill application quota, I find this to be a very easy task actually.

I’ve been working in Zurich for years, but live in Bern - I guess I would still have to go to RAV locally?

Thanks so much

As I understand it, if you're doing not full-time work, the RAV top up to the full amount, and the length of your entitlement increases. E.g. if you're entitled to 6K per month for two years, and you earn 3K, they'll pay you the additional 3K for four years.

Fairly sure you won't get less. It's a bit foggy now because it was ages ago for me, but you end up better off if you do ad hoc work whilst on the RAV.

You need to go to their website, put in your details and it will assign you to a RAV office (or you get a choice of a couple, I think). Not sure whether you'll have to sign on where you worked (ZH) or whether you can go local to you in BE.

RAV’s eLearning course should help the OP to understand interim earnings and many other topics:

No, it would be seen as partial employment.

As you are looking for full time work, it should not be a problem. But put it through a payroll company so it is all squared away nicely so there are no issues about getting supplemental income from the RAV and extending your cover period.

Also, if you have the option go with the SUVA as your arbeitslosenkasse.

Placing an ongoing independent consulting engagement through a payroll service can save potential issues with the SVA, the social security administration.

Regarding Suva, possibly the poster intended to write Syna, which has an Arbeitslosenkasse. Suva is a quasi-governmental accident insurance company.

Should have been Unia something like: https://bern.unia.ch/arbeitslosenkasse .

To be safe I would register with RAV, then pick up the contracting. When you're on RAV, they'll top up over your contracting income to match your lost income. However if you sign up for contracting before signing up for RAV I'm not sure if they'll see you as unemployed

When you declare the 20 hours as "zwischenverdienst",you could end up with more money, then you are receive right now.
