On my last visit to my RAV advisor, she told me that I must notify her if I leave town, e.g. if I go to the UK.
What are the rules here, does anyone know? I seem to recall that the idea is that if the RAV comes up with a job for you, you need to be able to get back within 24 hours for an interview, but searching here and on the internet with my limited German did not find an answer.
If I would like to occasionally go to the UK for a few days, but while there keep searching for a job, do I really need to tell her? To be honest it made me feel like a criminal on parole.
If your going to the UK 'for a few days' it's what most people & the RAV call a holiday. If you fly out on Friday night returning on Sunday that would be fine as it's what people who work do.
If you actually have an interview or work you can go to the UK for the interview / work, tell your advisor & send details of the flights. If your away for more than 1 night they may question this.
You need to be available for WORK TOMORROW, if not your not entitled to benefits.
You are entitled to four weeks paid annual holiday allowance whilst on Chômage (unemployment), basically 5 days per 60 unemployed. The link here is in french;
I found it by simply googling "chômage, vacance, Geneve".
I'm sure if you do the same with whichever words are relevant to your area you'll find a similar link.
@2 son and his fiancée are both on chômage at the moment and went to Copenhagen for a week earlier this year without any problems; they simply had to clear the time away with their 'handlers' first and were expected to fulfill their monthly quota of job-searches.
Why is it a holiday if I will be doing my job searching from my home there in the UK for a few days instead of from my apartment here for a few days?
If I was in the UK and not spending a requisite amount of time on job hunting that would indeed be a holiday. But that is not what I am talking about.
I understand the principle, but actually I am not going to be able to work the next day in any circumstances. Which professional among us is given a job starting the next day without an interview? Therefore at best I need to be available for an interview the next day. Ten years ago this would not be practicable because flight prices would be prohibitive whereas now it would normally be doable.
In any case, I am not seeking an argument about semantics. I just wondered if anyone here has some concrete links about the issue about whether an advisor can demand that you check in with them every time you leave home.
Just for the record, I am looking hard for a new job, and would like to start one as soon as possible, in case I gave an impression that I am trying to do anything untoward.
@anjela
Thanks for the link, but I am not talking about the normal "control free days"
Actually it is not officialy called a "Holiday" but "Control Free Days" if to translate. You are allowed to leave Switzerland but you have to inform RAV, fill out an official form and your consultant has to approve that, and as far as I remember those days have to be at least 5 days after each other (a Whole week basicly ) Then you are free to leave Switzerland and you do not have to look for a job officialy on those days.
If you do not have officially approved "Control Free Days" and want to leave Switzerland then you confirm the consequences of possible cut off for example.
You have to be on RAV a certain amount of days (working days / control days) before you can apply for the control free days which have to be taken in 5 day block not as one or two days here and there.
Most people I know just blag it and don't tell RAV they are away for a few days during the week as most communication is via email. Though if you are caught out you get sanctioned and lose money
My son does tell his handler if he's away from Geneva during the week job-hunting (in the north of the country), but not if he's away visiting family in that region Friday afternoon-Monday morning.
Suspect it'll depend on how nit-picking your advisor is, his advisor's fine about him travelling as he knows he can get in touch easily and #2 son will be back in Geneva within hours if needed.
If you stick to being out of the country over weekends and reachable by phone/email you'll probably be fine but the only person who can give you the definitive answer is the unemployment office itself!
Well, as I have said, I am not talking about holiday / control free days but while we are on that subject, I did not know that you had to take at least 5 at once. The following link does say that you can lump together two periods, e.g. 120 days of work search and take 10 days at once. I am not clear if you can take more that this.
I am a little curious about what qualifying period means though. First day of unemployment or first day of year. Probably the former, though I am not really sure.
Thanks, you are right but I would like to know the situation independently of asking, because I do not have the most sympathetic advisor and I do not want to cause unnecessary further interrogations.
Thanks, I have been just reading for a looooong time
Back to thema;
I would not ask to the officials, and as mentioned several times you may go abroad without approval but the risk always remains that you might get cut.
It's possible to go to the UK to job search for 90 days, you need to get permission & go to the unemployment office in the UK. It's called export of benefits.
Would anyone know whats the end result of this one? Have heard completely different opinions about whether its allowed to go abroad without informing RAV or not?
Am not talking about holiday or any control free days but like op, just having few days out of the country and keep looking for jobs during the time.
If this is officially allowed, how could you then get penalty, On what bases?
For sure this cannot be in hands of individual rav advisor but there has to be written rule somewhere.
You need to inform RAV if you are leaving town (even if you are applying from jobs from the beach, it is still considered holiday).
If you are leaving town to go to an interview, that is a different story and you just need to document it with the RAV at your next meeting. They will ask you where you interviewed etc though.
Youre not going to be looking for sh*t while abroad for a few days, save those white lies for your RAV berater
Here is the deal:
- You have to be in the country to receive benefits.
- You can apply for vacation days to go abroad (in 5 day blocks, but they can make exceptions to that. Also, as always, it differs between RAV beraters, mine for example had zero issues with me taking 2-3 days vacation here and there.)
- Off course, you can gamble and go abroad without informing them. The odds of getting caught are very slim. Ive done a cheeky few days here and there off the books and so have my friends. Just keep your phone with you and check your email every day.
- RAV advisors are basically incompetent, failed HR people at the lowest step of the government career ladder (and final, for most of them). They dont know all the rules. They might just allow exceptions, but make sure you get that in written.
C)if you have an interview you can get permission for up to 4 weeks abroad
D) there is very little chance of them knowing you were abroad without telling them. Just keep your phone on in case of phone calls. Your biggest danger is a nosey neighbour or a letter invite.
Thanks all but where did you got this information that you need to stay in your city or even inside country the whole time? Would anyone have a link to any written document that states that?
Just asking since have met few people who have been 100% convinced that this is not true.
Migros Cafe: Well there's this guy who I'm sure is on RAV and he hasn't emptied his letter box for days and missed his washing slot.
After Gymnasatic class: Well, there's this friend of mine who lives in a flat and she told me that there is a guy who doesn't even tell his neighbours that they could use the washing machine.
Office at the Town Hall: Morning everyone. I know folk are trying to cheat the system. Just the other day a colleague told me that she knows...
