i know it's a sacrilege but i am desperate and just don't have the time and energy to make it from scratch. no decent indian restaurants around these parts either. have tried one from manor which was nice enough but had no spice to it whatever and resembled a real rogan josh about as closely as riz casimir a real chicken curry. so just looking for something out of a jar that tastes at least mildly authentic and has a bit of oomph.
thanks for any suggestions!
While it certainly won't, on its own, make an 'authentic' one, we've had reasonable results from some of the curry pastes you can find in New Asia Market (Basel and Zurich ) . There are three or four brands, at least one of which has a Rogan Josh variety. We use it as a base and add whatever we feel it needs, rather than following the recipe, but it's quite a good blend of flavours.
Go to any Indian shop and buy a jar of spice paste. Buy some chicken and some yoghurt and tinned tomatoes. Don't be lazy & make your own curry.
I find the curry pastes are very salty, so don't add any salt until you have tasted the curry.
You will never find a decent ready made curry meal in Coop, Migros, Manor or any other Swiss shop!
Yes, and the same goes for many other constituents. Always worth reading the ingredients and finding which one may overpower the rest, then adding more of them or others to balance it out if the tasting so indicates.
Fixed that for you.
The Patak's stuff you get in the jar is pretty good (and I say that as a genuine South Asian).
good to fry a few onions and add some red chili powder with the meat before adding the sauce in the jar.
Is it worth asking one of the EF folks of Indian heritage if they could make the paste for you? Authentic, and you could probably make a new friend in the process
ps: you can count me out, as I am as coconut as you can get
i find patak ok but way too sweet. they sell it at coop here but not rogan josh, only korma and something else.
will try the adding chili to the meat before adding the sauce (i usually do it the other way around). i suppose making it spicier is the easiest fix :-).
A korma is mild? Who'd have thought?!
Patak Rogan Josh is available from Britshop at 6,50 a jar - don't know how that compares to Coop prices, though ..... and only cost effective if you're buying other stuff because of shipping charge.

This stir-in sauce is really great, second only to making it yourself:

They usually sell it at Jim's British Market (online shop www.jims.ch ) but they aren't getting any more in until the end of the month, so I will have to be inventive! All of the 'Meena's' sauces are delicious IMO and a lot cheaper than hitting the takeaway...
That's confusing. Are you calling yourself lazy?
sorry never tried the korma. not my thing.
add to all this that Curry Lovers here learnt to know Indian cuisine NOT in India but in London. In my case back in autumn 1972, when finding the French Restaurants up there incredibly expensive, the Italian ones in London miserable and the Arab and Persian ones rare and fairly expensive, and so the Indian cuisine THE alternative. Three months were enough to explore this cuisine
There are some quite good Indian Restaurants around here like
Indian Palace, Schaffhauser-Str, Z-Oerlikon
Tandoori BBQ, Z-Seefeld
Masala, Stauffacher
Kerala, Zch Radiostudio
Ravi's Indian Cuisine, Z-Wipkingen
As both the well known Raja Bongo, but also the famous Mr Ravi Taneja, told me, "authentic" in case of India is difficult to define as Indian cuisine varies by state and by region
i first ate indian food as a child travelling in india and still remember the taste of the best dahl i ever taster. mind you, the best rogan josh i ever had was in nz about 30 years ago. you bought it frozen and reheated it at home. it was divine and i am still on a quest to find that taste again :-).
thanks everyone for their awesome suggestions.
I can highly recommend this company in the UK for spice kits delivered to your door here in Switzerland.
We had given up finding good spicy food here in restaurants or takeaway's and this is the next best thing.
First tried it when we received a gift box but have also ordered kits from their Sale section. Will sign up to their monthly subscription next.

All you need is the ingredients, a food processor, and 20 minutes. In fact it takes more time and effort to go and get a jar than it does to get a good stock of ingredients and use them whenever you feel like it.
Here are some easy and tasty curry paste recipes, you just need to get a small stock of the basic ingredients and you're good to go http://www.jamieoliver.com/recipes/r...TzPGseZLomq.97
Once you make your own curries no jar will ever suffice.
