Recommend Movies - coming soon or available to rent

Thanks for the info, Polarise. Will look out for the book. Have you seen it in the Zug or Cham library by any chance?

as I live in Bern, haven't had an opportunity to visit any library in Zug ... .

have a look on Amazon as there is also a paperback that was released alongside the film .....

Hi there,

The hours,,,, I watched this at Easter time,,,,, loaned and recommended by a friend... I enjoyed the quirkiness of the plot (have to admit, I had to go through all the DVD interviews etc before I fully got it, at the same time tho, I was suffering from a slightly feverish malaise at the time, so couldn't work it out for myself).

Probably by many, would be classed as more of a 'womans' film,,, still, the portrayal of Virginia Woolf by Nicole Kidman was fabulous IMHO. Meryl Streep always gets the thumbs up from me as well, besides,, the rest of the cast were fantastic....

All in all, I think it's thoroughly worth the watch...

Edit; just realized, it was made in 2002, behind the times as ever, still, it is a good enough movie so I will leave it here as my little input.

Thanks, Polorise. Was just taking a long shot.

I'm happy that the Deutsch Amazon delivers free to Switzerland.

Lost in Translation , a Sofia Coppola moovie, it's my favourite

Downfall with Bruno Ganz (Swiss) in the lead is well worth the watching

Polorise, yes, I've seen 'Downfall'. Bruno Ganz is indeed a very good Deutsch actor. It's a harrowing yet enlightening film.

ok, 3 i recommend:

strähl

is a funny movie. you ll see a lot of "familiar" places around kreis 5 / langstrasse. story is about a cop in zürich trying to fight the the drugscene off the streets in langstrasse.

dog days

is a very different movie done by ulrich seidl, austrian director. story is about suburban life in austria on 2-3 hot summerdays. what i like is the mixture of documentary style movie with real play. the cast is ace, because most of them are layman actors.

nobody knows

is a true story showing the resentiments a woman has to face in japan/tokio while havin 3 kids but no constant dad, no "real" family.

one day the mother falls in love again and she leaves her three kids aged 12, 8 and 5 alone in the flat that they never have left in their whole life before...

j.lo only rules in "u turn"! "lost in translation" is very nice, loved this movie a lot. same like "match point". but i have not seen the "scoop" yet, anyone?

"marie antoinette" is nice for just having nice scenes and colors and for me it is one movie where you dont have to think at all. just a movie with fancy dresses, barock combined with strokes music-> fun.

"magnolia" is fantastic! one of cruise ́best acting ever.

requiem for a dream is ok. i like the editing, cuts, sequences, colors etc.

i dont think that this is the point abot that movie.

(for me) its the capturing of a comic strip, putting it into a movie and that is really ace! its like rourke, alba, willis and wood being transformed into comic characters...like just their skin only has changed. the whole set seems to be painted and that in the same way the comic actually is done. i mean...if you say, thats no biggy at all, wheres the personal style, the interpretation of the comic...ok.

but its a very good adaption...it is really, really good turned into a (un)real movie.

Das Experiment and Goodbye Lenin were great (for very different reasons). Avoid Hannibal Rising like the plague (Hannibal is now completely a good guy WTF??). Funny Games is an older but highly disturbing film (not graphic, but it plays with your mind). Secretary is good. Have heard very good things about a french film called 'tell no one' but am yet to see it.

Another great but very depressing film is an animated Japanese film called grave of the fireflies. It's about two orphaned young children trying to survive in Japan during the war. It is beautifully animated but the story is sadder than watership down (and that takes some doing)

"the experiment" is ace!

"good bye lenin" i dont like. i dont like ostalgie in general like "sonnenallee" and stuff like that. but "good bye lenin" is far the best compared to any other type of that genre. but just watch "schultze gets the blues". highly recommended. but avoid "the educators"-> crap.

concerning "funny games" and any other movie by this director... i wonder sometimes what has happened to haneke in his childhood? "the piano player" for example...evil d*ck!

one movie i can really never watch again is "dancer in the dark". never ever before i have cried in a movie, never before my belly n throat felt/feel like they had/have to explode. i do have the dvd still wrapped in plastic foil here on my shelf. couldnt manage to watch this movie again.. but i love it though. the same is with "lilja 4ever". heavy stuff.

then, if you liked the comic by its style...try "princess monoke".

very nice but sad too.

anime i like as well. my favourites are "akira" and "gost in the shell"

edit: should start some rap business...

Now is that a new thread, movies to watch when drunk...and other assorted categories?

Ill be predictable and say Fight Club can watch it over and over

Grave of the Fireflies is my favourite anime film.

More Anime recommendations required, please. I've seen those 3 that Flow23 mentioned.

I also loved Ninja Scroll and the Cowboy Bebop Series and movie are above par.

OK so this thread has lain dormant for a while but I thought I would resurrect it because...

..I just watched Into The Wild . Now I know that I'm prone to making statements of exuberance, but for me this is one of the best films I've seen in years. It's not often I come out of a cinema and my mind is whirling but this did it. Inspirational, touching, funny, and rewarding. Well worth a watch.

I am a bit late to post here but I saw this movie too, quite a while ago actually. I second your opinion...big time.

Well I know some brilliant ones...
