Recommendation for Chip Machine

Has anyone got any experience of a chip (frites) fryer called Actifry? This is described in a local newspaper review here in Vaud as revolutionary. (Even very popular in Belgium!) Apparently you can fry 1 kilo of chips with a table spoon of oil. It's expensive at 249 (Coop) and at 219 fr. at Toppreise. Can you use it to cook anything else but chips? (I lived 22 years in Belgium so love good "frites" but cannot stand the mess of the traditional fryers).

I bake my chips in the oven. I use about a tablespoon of olive oil brushed on the chips with a pastry brush. It is also nice to add cumin, paprika and chili to the oil before brushing.

I also have a deep fryer that closes shut and is cold to touch on the outside. It doesn't make any mess at all.

Hi Mariezug,

Many thanks for your reply. Actually the newspaper article said that you could get the same result by baking them in the oven as you describe. I presume that you chop up the potatoes, place them on greaseproof paper, brush on the oil and then cook at 200°C (?) for how long?

Thanks,

Swiss bill, I find it's better to put your oil and herbs/spices of choice to heat up first. That way you'll get a little of the reaction that your chip's experience being plunged into hot oil.

They are not like chips like we know them but it is a great alternative.

No need for the greaseproof paper - just brush the bottom of the tray with oil first. Don't pre-heat the try because I found that the chips then stick. Place chips flat on the try and not touching. Use two trays if necessary.

Cook with the upper grill on your oven with the tray up high at 190°C for around 20 mins or until the chips start to brown. Thin chips will be quicker. Turn with an egg flipper and cook again until brown. Yes, it is much slower than with a fryer. You can also do wedges in their skins - no need for peeling potatoes! Great with sweet chilli sauce and sour cream. Yum. I usually use Victoria potatoes for roasting here too. Migros had 5kg for CHF 5 this week.
