For people who had inguinal hernia repair surgery in Switzerland:
Do you recommend your surgeon? the competency and morals is priority, then (if possible) matches my insurance policy so that I can pay less from my own pocket.
I can go to any canton for this.
A friend recommends me a surgeon in Geneva, but he only performs WITH HOSPITALIZATION in a private clinic, where they only have semi-private and private rooms, the total cost would be around 13.6k CHF (1 night in clinic) and I will have to pay 6.8k on my own,
my health insurance policy:
Mandatory one: 2500 CHF deductible
Complementary hospitalization insurance:
-for public room I will not pay anything except the part invoiced to mandatory insurance(deductible)
for semi-private room: I will need to pay 40% up to 8000 per year.
if I go to any public room hospitalization or do the outpatient option, the max I will pay is 3200 CHF (2500+700)
BUT ONCE AGAIN THE QUALITY of the surgery is priority, because if poorly performed, the hernia may re-occur and it is much more complicated to repair it with a second surgery.
Just had this surgery yesterday at Claraspital Basel.
Bilateral Hernia, laparoscopic with general anesthesia.
All good so far, only paid the franchise (mine is 300+700 min hospitalization with Swica); I have general ward hospitalization but they only have semi private (where I stayed without any extra) and private rooms. Great hospital and personnel, 10/10.
Surgeon was Dr. Lea Stroll, again just had this less than 48h ago but almost no pain and seems will progress well, let's see...
It's a fairly simple straightforward bit of surgery. I had mine done a few years ago at Bruderholz (BL) also laproscopic, for which a general anaesthetic is expected. Into hospital early morning, surgery, stayed overnight and then home. Went back to work the following day.
It's really not a big deal, so I don't see the point in searching out some expensive surgeon.
You get to talk to the surgeon beforehand, so if you're not happy, you can try somewhere else. Sorry, don't remember the name of my surgeon - decent bloke, had done the op many times.
Thanks a lot Istcantabria, did you have a quote for the surgery? How much would be the total invoice?
I don't understand why in your case you don't need to pay extra for the semi-private room while in my case CSS will classify it as semi-private room even the private clinic doesn't have general ward hospitalization
Thanks, sorry I didn't get the name of the clinic/hospital.
How much was the total invoice? (including the part insurance paid) Thanks
It is because some hospitals like Claraspital don't have general wards of 4/6 people anymore but only private or semiprivate rooms.
Don't know how much will be the bill but something around 10-15k; I will have to pay only the franchise (300+700) in my case.
If I am not mistaken the below link show the ranking of hospitals in Switzerland for herniotomy. Claraspital is specialized in Visceral surgery and had more than 700 surgeries of this kind every year. Despite being a very simple thing, you can check to find an hospital with sufficient experience -specially if laparoscopic- but again, it is very straightforward
1. looks like you didn't have a quote before going to surgery?
2. one private clinic in Geneva also only has semi-private or private room, however CSS will not consider it as "general ward", otherwise I wouldn't need to pay the extra either. looks like our insurance companies are treating the same situation differently. are you also with CSS?
3.very interesting link, thanks, however I feel confused about their ranking by case number, cantonal hospital generally have done more surgery operations than private clinics, but I guess it doesn't mean they have a better level/quality, otherwise private one wouldn't be more expensive than cantonal hospital
sorry do you mean Kantonsspital Baselland? I googled the name you mentioned but don't find the same name as a hospital, sorry I don't speak German
1. No, not needed it was fully insured (exc. franchise)
2. It seems there are private clinics/hospitals that accept general insurance patients (like Claraspital) and others not. I am with Swica
3. You are right, it is just an indicator. I don't know any surgeon here but the fact Claraspital was specialized in Visceral surgery and the high number of hernia surgery they do every year was reassuring. Having said that it is always a risk. Nothing is guaranteed, but again this is a very simple surgery, should be fine.
