Recommendations for sunny beach escapes during winter

Hello

We are looking for inspiration. Looking for destinations for 1-2 weeks holiday in warmer territories with at least pool, better yet beach experience - maybe also over New Years. Ideally not too far, with some alternatives to pure beach laziness.

Canary Islands are great, but have been many times and would like something new. Egypt Red Sea is boring and isolated. Morocco / Agadir any good? Florida or Mexico have some appeal, but this is already a long flight and getting pricey. Oman also looks quite expensive, although appealing.

Any ideas?

I’m not sure if they’ll fulfil your beach criteria in winter but Madeira or Cape Verde are both great winter holiday destinations in my opinion and not too far away.

What does CV offer that Canary Islands do not have? I always thought it is pretty similar.

Air Mauritius has direct flights from Geneva twice a week during the northern winter season. Temps in low 30s and great beaches. Try and avoid the Cyclones.

You have kids, right? What do they want to do? We loved Oman when we lived in UAE, especially in a good winter. Can be rainy at times. I loved loved loved Madeira, but the weather is awful now…when are you planning to go? By March it may be lovely. Mexico could be fun if you choose the right location, or it could be dangerous. Florida?–Do you have a death wish? I can’t imaging the Trumpy vibes, given how bad it was 4 years ago. However, if you are serious, I can give you some tips, as we perched there for 20 years.

Next winter only, maybe over New Years. With one moody 15 yo girl.

Wasn’t too keen on Florida, but map and climate brought it on the list. Maybe better some Carribean place, but have no clue there.

The landscapes are pretty similar although CV has nicer beaches in my opinion and is warmer in winter.
CV is more natural and unspoilt and doesn’t have all the touristy vibes that Tenerife does.

If you’re looking for nightlife etc CV is probably not the place for you, it’s much quieter than Tenerife. If you like outdoorsy activities like hiking and stuff CV has plenty to offer.

I must admit that FL is wonderful at NY…

I stayed here

Not far from Essaouira in Morocco. You’d need a hire car though.

I’d consider inviting a friend of the 15 year old to come along

Loads of places. But if you don’t want to fly long haul then most of them are out.

Caribbean? Indian Ocean? Asia?

Diving in Eleuthera? Gorgeous!

Seychelles. Zurich-Istanbul-Victoria. Its actually “the season” now until april-ish. We’ve done it a few times, unforgettable and what the local skippers rightfully call it “the last paradise on earth”

How far is “too far” - how many hours on the plane, for example? Edelweiss has direct flights to a number of nice, warmer destinations during the Swiss winter.

That is the question. Would have said 6, but once you start looking at the maps you quickly ask yourself whether a few more hours wouldn’t also be ok. And 10 seconds later you consider Indonesia :upside_down_face:

Anyway, it is probably one of those January-is-one-looong-month threads. Thanks for the ideas all.

I admit I’m biased, but Cape Town, South Africa would probably tick all the boxes except the 6 hours. The exchange rate of CHF to ZAR is also quite appealing, particularly if you’re considering bringing along a friend for your daughter.

And yes, January is already far too long and too cold!

The thought of paying for yet another kid is anything but appealing. Cape Town sounds good though.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. The other kid’s parents could foot the bill for their child, and might be more willing to do so with a very favorable exchange rate. It’s roughly 20 ZAR/1 CHF as compared to an exchange with Euros or USD.

Cape Town, apart from being an amazing destination on its own, has the added benefit of doing shark viewing. We did this a few years ago and is a lifetime memory.

Having said that, Seychelles is not only slightly shorter, but for a week long escapade in Jan the better choice IMHO. DO get a catamaran and a skipper though. Staying in Victoria is ok-ish, but nothing spectacular. On a boat…you will see the best vistas in your life, I don’t say this lightly.

Maybe Seville & Cordoba. The weather won’t be hot but will be sunny and you should see around 20c at this time of year. Cities are interesting and the food of excellent quality. Short flight to Malaga.

Maybe this and a sunlamp.
