Refused credit

I have just been refused a Visa card from the Co-Op (Credit Suisse). I have no idea why.

I already have a Co-Op Mastercard. Have had it for a couple of years, use it regularly, and pay all bills in full each month, on time.

I am single, salaried, and earn over 100,000 CHF annually.

I have lived here for over 20 years, and have never been either unemployed or in debt.

They tell me that if my circumstances change I can re-apply, but dont tell me why my request was refused! The second card wouldnt even give me more credit, my 7000 CHF limit would apply to both cards in the future instead of just the one.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Maybe they discovered you one day went to Migros

Maybe ring and ask! could be that they mixed you up with someone else?

If the decisions are made in the same way as in the UK, calling them won't help: your details are fed into a computer which makes a rules based decision. The operator won't know why.

Did you apply for a platinum card? From how you describe yourself, the only thing that springs to mind is that you maybe don't earn enough for one (>120k).

I assume there is an annual charge for the card? If there isn't, another reason could be that they know they won't make any money out of you, as you pay in full every month.

Maybe its because you already have a credit card with a high limit?

In some cases its not the credit card company but your bank who specify the limit. I had this problem once. With 100K a year, 7K is probbaly more than your disposable monthly salary so maybe you're simply asking for too much.

Try checking with your employer whether they do company credit cards. I have AMEX corporate and this basically bypasses my bank and gives me extra credit when I need it.

Thanks for your answers. No, I wasnt asking for a platinum card, and the card is free, like the one I already have. It was they that decided the 7000 CHF limit, and their blurb said that they would subsequently divide the present limit between the two cards.

The reason I would really like a Visa is that I travel a lot, and in some countries Visa is the card of choice.

I dont think they would give info over the phone anyway, as I could be anyone calling.

Eyebeebe, I think you could be right that they have realised that they have never made any money out of me with one card, so two isnt going to help their case! I used to have an English Visa card, and this was stopped one day, without warning. They explained that I hardly used it. I only discovered it had been stopped when I tried to pay for a restaurant meal for 15 people with it on my birthday. Cringe....

You can get a VISA card from CFF which doubles as a half price card! Try that!!
