Registered in Zurich, even without a home

Please, I've gone blank, can't remember the vocab about this matter, so can't google it.

A friend who lives in Zurich will soon be without a contract on a flat. The person is likely to be stopping off at various friends' homes, in Switzerland and abroad, while trying to find a new place to live in Zurich.

This person wants to and needs to maintain his legal domicile ("Anmeldung") and papers in Zurich.

I seem to remember that there is some way to be registered even if one doesn't have an address, but I don't know where and how.

How is this done, please?

This person is Swiss, so there are no permit issues here.

Also: is there another way to receive post while away, other than a Postbox at the Post Office? The rules there are very strict about having to emptly the box frequently, and I doubt this will be possible in this case.

Thank you for any pointers.

One friend might offer mailbox and registration address. Not the super legal solution put it really simplifies things.

In Basel there is the Schwarzer Peter, Verein für Gassenarbeit which offers an address to those without a residence. This article explains:

Thank you, both!

I admit I'm a bit overwhelmed by the links you posted, aSwissInTheUS. I'm not sure I could take in everything.

There seemed to be a lot described about people who are NOT "angemeldet" (registered) . This person, however, IS angemeldet, but the rental contract will soon be over, and no alternative accommodation has been found. So they are not new, but already registered.

Perhaps my question ist: does the registration automatically cease if the rental contrat ends? I couldn't find anything that said it does end, especially if the ongoing intent is to stay in the gemeinde.

If, however, the registration does continue, then why would the organisation to which you linked, Mullhollander, even exist?

Does anyone know of a comparable organisation in Zurich, please?

Any friend offering a pseudo-registration runs the risk of their own situation's being conflated with that of the homeless friend. That can have outworkings with the landlord or the authorities, potentially negatively so.

Would there be any similar fist for receiving post only (no shared living space), no pseudo-Anmeldung? Can a friend B receive the mail of A, just as c/o, without this being anything to do with place of residence?

If A has a home, and B has a home, and A and B are each formally registered (angemeldet) in their own individual places, can B permanently give his/her postal address as c/o A... or are there negative consequences for A or for B?

If A has a home, but B has no home, and A is formally registered (angemeldet) in his/her own individual place, can B permanently give his/her postal address as c/o A... or are their negative consequences for A or for B?

Cant the friend get a postbox anyway and give the key to someone else who lives closeby?

No, I doubt it. Seems like the person is falling apart. And the network of friends is either unstable in themselves, or exhausted from long-term helping, or still want to help but not with this aspect, or feel they don't want to take on that responsibility. But it's worth asking around again.

If someone would do it, then, yes, that would be a solution... although I think that the Post Office may require a fixed registration of residence ("Anmeldung"), too.

However, if a friend were going to end up receiving the post, it would probably be less work for them if it could be delivered to their home (so they didn't have to collect it from the post box). That's why I asked, above, whether this would have any negative consequences for either party.
