Hello, my wife and I are expecting our first child later this year and trying to get organized. In researching what is required, it appears both my wife and I have to obtain our own birth certificates, however, these have to be no less than 6 months old - is this correct?
Has anyone done this recently - does the birth certificates have to have the apostile seal as well?
Also where and who does this paper work? is this done at the hospital? or do I need to head to the Geminde / Kreisburo?
Who issues the birth certificate and where should I expect it to come from? Hopsital? Post? What about auslanderausweis?
Thank you
It depends on your nationalities and a few other factors - fill in

The hospital will register your newly born, if the paperwork is fixed upfront both of you are seen as the parents, if not only the mum, and dad needs to register later.
Best to pass by city hall (Zivilstandsamt on the 1st floor, go left when you leave the elevator and it is in the corner) and they can inform you perfectly what papers are needed for your situation and nationalities, if they need translation of your papers etc.. You also need a marriage certificate, and if one or two of you have been married before they also want the divorce papers from court etc.. if you have the papers it is all a quick straight forward process.
Thanks all for the responses
I went to the Zivilstandsamt and showed them my auslanderausweis, passport, and family book. The clerk then inputted some info into her system (not sure exactly) and printed out a letter stating what I need to provide once the new baby comes:
- Marriage certificate, needs to be issued within last 6 months
- Birth certificate for mother and father, needs to be issued within last 6 months - but she said no need for apostile which I'm a bit surprised... is that everyone else's experience as well?
In our case the governments/city's that issued our papers stamped them, and those were accepted. So no need for apostille.
