So the EU prices of some EV's are especially affordable compared to Swiss prices.
Current thinking is a BMW i4 40, net price in Hungary is about 51k CHF, while the same car starts at 70k here.
I've asked Hungarian BMW if they would honor the warranty in whole of EU and CH and they said yes. I assume the car is the same whether it's the "Swiss delivery" or not(?). The configuration options are not exactly the same, but in the end you get to the same car.
Does someone have experience in (re)importing cars to CH as a Swiss resident, meaning:
- buying the car abroad (so much is easy)
- reclaiming the VAT (must be a process)
- transporting the car into CH (~<1k?)
- doing all the taxation / registration / MfK as necessary (this is the real Q).
I guess the above could be done for a max of 3-4k CHF, where the price spread would hugely benefit such deals.
Is anyone on EF actually in this business to do some runs? I already have demand for 2 cars.
Reimport? Like a car which was imported to Switzerland, than exported, and now you want to agiun reimport it?
I do not think you can profit from the fact it was allready once imported to Switzerland, specially not if VAT and other taxes were refundend after the export.
If you buy brand new car and import you are subject to additional taxes although these are linked to CO2 and an EV is low on CO2 emissions, you would need to check in the Service des Autos for this.
If it has been registered for at least 6 months on another countries number plates, you do not pay this additional tax.
Importing is simple, cost to transport at Chf 1k probably a bit low, do it yourself !
You will get Hungarian VAT back then you pay 4.4% Swiss vehicle tax and 7.7% Swiss VAT, you will need to pass the Swiss test to get Swiss plates and a grey card.
Make sure your garage can arrange and pay for temporary plates and third party insurance for at least 1 month.
Make sure you get all necessary papers including Cert of Conformity (CoC) or you will have difficulty registering here.
Look in Germany, they also have great experience doing this.

You will save something but not as much as you think
compare very carefully…basic specs are the same ?? (these are usually very different as they are country dictated) free servicing ??? additional 3 or 4 year guarantee ??
I don’t think there is a Chf 20k difference, you are missing something, this is too much, there is not so much profit in cars, it is the extras and servicing nowadays where the $$ are.
Reimport is when a German car is made for Hungary but then are bought in Hungary and is put into service in Germany again.
Swiss just call it direkt import, really.
Where you profit is much lower prices in Eastern EU, plus VAT reclaim.
The cars are the exact same vehicles. There is no quality surplus in the "Swiss models", they're all made in Germany or Eastern Europe anyway.
Prices do have a huge gap now as BMW is unable or unwilling to keep up with falling EUR-HUF prices in Hungary.
LOL I figured out why there is such a huge price gap.
TLDR: there ain't any cars in Eastern-Europe
Just spoke with a Hungarian BMW dealer. The cars can be ordered with an estimated(!) 18-months delivery timeline, but there are no warranties of any kind on this. Prices will fluctuate quarterly and the buyer might end up having a significantly higher price than what it was at order time (based on EUR-HUF fluctiation). The BMW factory will prioritize countries as well as models based on capacity - meaning the Swiss and German orders as well as the M50 orders (in the case of the i5) will probably be done way before the much lower-priced Hungarian siblings.
Basically he hinted that trying to buy a car there is totally in vain and there's no guarantee for anything (other than 15% down payment at the time of the order). That's... just appalling.
Clearly shows how deep the shit is that the ICE carmakers are in (vs TSLA).
Yes we are all well aware of that, but what you don't understand is these cars are imported by an "official" importer to each country and each country specs up the cars differently according to what they thing the market wants and can bear.
Swiss cars are made on EXACT same assembly lines, however they usually have a high spec,. lots of options if you prefer, as the Swiss want this and can afford it.
Swiss cars nearly all have a puncture repair kit, German cars do not unless you pay extra.....
Believe me, the list is VERY long, even going to which type of tyres are fitted.
