Relocating to India

Please don't get mad at me mods...but I am looking on here for advise from people from India to help out with some questions I have regarding reloction to India - as the questions are quite specific, I would really like to do this over private message.

Basically this:

- Visa regulations. I am going to India to be with my partner, he is American and has a 10 year visa. As we are not married (yet), is there any way to go around the 6 month visa issue? Or will I have to just get a 6 month visa at a time?

- I don't have a job (as yet) in India though I am looking from here. I know I can't work on a tourist visa, but is it possible to get a work visa then in India or should I only go with the work visa and job first instead of scouting around down there?

And there are more questions, I would be really grateful if there are any Indians out there on the forum who could help me out? I am going to get in touch with the embassy of course, but perhaps someone has other ideas that would be helpful.

Thank you!

Congratulations Starbug.

Now I think you know more about this than us.

Though I cannot help you with your original question, I think someone else surely would, I wish you all the best for your future.

Starbug

feel free to contact me if you have other questions...

in your current situation, it seems you have no other choice than to keep geting 6-month tourist visas.

I know a lady (married to an Indian national, no less), who has been doing that for about 3 years now.

The work visa route would not be easy to arrange, unless you are very well qualified of course. as you can well imagine, we aren't particularly short of people back there...!

From my experience, not personal, but through people I know, it is fairly simple to organise a work permit once you are there.

Red tape is easily overcome once you know the right people there.

Go for a tourist visa, get there and look into it once you're there. Do I promote corruption, no, but it does exist in many such countries and can help you a lot.

Good luck with the move Starbug. India is a beautiful country with great people.

Thank you! As always the EF pulls through to get real help! Thank you for all the pms, and above all, the support! This has been a dream of mine since I moved away from Asia as a teenager, and it is just too wild to have been presented with the opportunity.

Wow, you must be over the moon, sorry I have no practical advice but I bet there are lots here who do. I'm sure you can make this work! Lots of good luck to you.

Hey Starbug,

I spent a year in India, and from what I saw the working is easier that getting than visa.

I am passing on a colleagues experience here, very much second hand. Two years ago now, I was working in Delhi, my employer was excellent did all the visa stuff for us, before wen went to India. One of my colleagues who was hired at the same time brought along a partner. My colleague British, his girlfriend Spanish. I can’t overstate the helpfulness of our employer- they did everything they could up to and over personal contacts and letters to the relevant people.

And yet...We both got hired in the summer, and partly cos of visa stuff, and mostly cos they wanted to, the colleague and his girlfriend got hitched round about Christmas.

The idea was that them being hitched, with our employers help and so on, the visas would be no problem. But things didn’t come through in time, the wedding wasn’t registered properly... so poor wife had to spend a week in Katthmandu just to leave India.

That was to deal with the six month tourist visa thing. Since then, they are still having problems getting their marriage recognised, they have been married a year and half now, but she has since found work. When she got hired she was on a tourist visa. I don’t know exactly what happened in the end either, they, her employers, sorted a visa for her, or they are looking the other way.

But it was a hell of a song and dance for them. And given the amount of help they had (we were semi-diplomatic staff) I don’t envy you. But having said that, they are still there.

Not sure how helpful that is but if you are heading to Delhi, PM me, I can recommend some ex-pat type stuff there,

Best of luck,

Sarah

I dont know anything about India, but when I recently moved to Switzerland I first registered a company and then employed myself and rented a place and went to the Gemeinde and promptly got my B-ausweis.

Why not try that in India? You could work as a consultant. With a typical Indian minimum salary you can probably pay yourself a long time with a rather limited initial capital.

Just a thought.

Starting a company in India, particularly as a foreigner, might not be so easy.

Explore it but be cautious. Red tape in India can prove to be a nasty surprise.

Hello Star bug,

Firstly wish you a very comfortable relocation. I am an indian ,but sorry I do not know the rules for foreigners

Here is some info I thought could be useful for you.

Spouse Immigration and Dependent Immigration

In India, work permits are commonly a long-term immigration solution, therefore immediate family members will be permitted to join the main applicant in India. I am not sure how unmarried partners are treated though.

Immigration law requires any such dependents who wish to engage in employment to secure their own permit for working in India.

I guess your best bet is:

Thank you all! It is really quite a move I am planning here and it seems it'll be in January instead of March so I have to move...so basically if I am getting this right, I can live there on a 6 month visa and then have to leave, but does that mean I can re-enter India or do I have to wait a certain amount of time?

Thank you sajacas for the advise, I will pm you for ex-pat stuff. I'm heading for Ahmedabad though, which is a little daunting!

Wish you an excellent stay in India. You will always carry memorable, happy memories of the stay.

If any issues pm to me

Best wishes
