Hi,
We have a 14 month old baby and she has ulcers in her mouth. It seems to be very painful. She has not been eating or drinking for that reason.
The doctor here did not given any medication or remedy for the ulcers. Any suggestions on how parents deal with it.
thanks
My son got something like that. It's a virus, a cousin of herpes.
It was explained to us that there was no cure for the ulcers: we just gave ibuprofen and paracetamol to ease the pain until they passed, which took a few days.
Anyway, at that age they can't use a mouthwash or anything like that, and as it's viral antibiotics won't help
There seems to a virus going round (as MeĢlusine says), if your toddler has a temperature, a rash or red parches on her hands, feet, possibly her bottom, then it could be this;

There's not much you can do about it but keep her comfortable and wait it out.
Try cold yogurt drinks (possibly mixed with some milk to make it runnier), that seems to be the easiest thing for a child to swallow when their mouth is sore.
If you have a Reformhaus pharmacy or a pharmacy that has a lot of natural stuff they might have a spray you can use to help treat the sores. Mine did and it made a big difference for the inside of my kids mouth. HFM is no fun, there isn't anything you can do beyond pain meds and cold food like cottage cheese, yogurt etc.
I suggest you speak to the Paediatrician again and ask if they can give some medication. Some teething gel (mild anaesthetic), might be appropriate.
Cold drink might be mire comfortable than alarm, but if the baby is not drinking at all then it is important she does not get dehydrated...
Thanks for your responses. We are using the OSA Gel which is not giving much relief but the paracetamols are giving temporary relief.
The doc advised that this is not a hand, foot and mouth disease as my daughter had no blisters / boils on her hands and only one or 2 on her feet.
The have taken an appointment for Monday with the doc and am looking for a pharmacy with natural medicines.
thx again.
Hi,
I don't have kids, but I feel bad for your child and thought I could offer a little help.
You can try making chamomile tea, or green tea, then cool it, and rub or drop the cold tea on the affected area. Re-apply as needed.
For me, sugar instantly relieves canker sore pain. Just dab a little on the sore and re-apply as needed.
I hope this helps
If there were any blisters/boils then HFM is still a possibility, and if your daughter's still struggling to take in fluids by tomorrow I'd advise that you either see the pediatrician again before the weekend or take the child to the local A&E.
maybe oil of cloves...its antiseptic and mildly anaesthetic too...
Ohno undiluted clove oil will burn and sting the little one.
A desensitizing Gel will help numb temporarily while feeding.
why is the ulcer there : either Vit B1 deficiency or probably if accompanied by fever and multiple ulcers could be a sign of hand foot and mouth disease.
( to name a few)
wish you a quick recovery
thanks for the recommendations.
Ice Cream seems to be her staple for now. Without the paracetamol that seems to be painful for her but she is much better than the last couple of days.
Thanks once again.
There is a medicine that *cures* mouth ulcers and, oddly, nobody seems to have heard about it. All you see promoted for sale are the gels that numb the mouth but don't cure the ulcer. What you want is called "adcortyl with orabase". Google it.
When I get a painful ulcer, this stuff will get rid of it overnight in many cases. 48 hours at most. The only caveat for your case is that the stuff contains a steroid to reduce inflammation. A baby may try to eat it and that might not be good. So *ask your doctor* before you try it. I was given it as a child, though. If you do try it, administer it before bed so that it can sit undisturbed on the ulcer.
'Adcortyl' is a steroid lotion and not recommended for viral infections (it can make them worse).

Given the age of the baby, the likely cause of the illness is one of the common viruses of childhood. Eg. Hand-foot-mouth, herpes etc.
My mother used to apply honey on them and it did work. Search for "Natural Home Remedies for Mouth Ulcers".
There's propolis for babies, but have not seen it being sold in Switzerland.
It works great for me, but not sure if the taste is too strong (despite being labeled as for babies) or how it works on terms of allergies, after all it is a bee-product.
p.s. what I understand is that the main difference of baby vs standard propolis is that it does not contain alcohol.
also, not sure if can do anything for ulcers, definitely no disinfection side but you may also consider "gengigel". it is great for dents. also comes with baby version.
But one must never use honey on a baby less than a year old. Their intestines aren't ready to digest a bacteria carried by honey, which is innocuous to adults and older children but can be deadly to babies.
