Above the cooking area of our oven is an exhaust fan with two downlights. One of the lights stopped working. They are halogen lights. As the correct halogen is no longer available I replaced both lights with LED lamps. But after 1 miniute they start flimmering badly and they make a buzzing noise. What can I do?
Find out the voltage of the electrical connection ( from 12V through to 400V) and install an appropriate, good quality LED lamp.
Post close-up photos of the old halogen lamp and the new LED lamp showing electrical ratings.
That would be a start.
This is the new one that flickers .

And here is the old one-Halogen
Are they on a circuit with a dimmer? If so you should get LED lamps that dim, not all do.
It says not dim-able. Try to find one that does.
No dimmer. Its either on or off.
Both links you gave are for LED lights not halogen. The second is dimmable, the first isnât. Iâd try the second.
Itâs not just the LED lamps that need to be dimmable but the dimming circuitry needs to support LED bulbs and old ones (sometimes using a rheostat, do not).
An LED is progressively dimmed by reducing the phase when it is on, and increasing the phase when it is off.
A Halogen is dimmed by reducing the voltage across it.
You need a âtransformerâ from mains down to 12v specifically for LEDs. Itâs not a transformer in the real sense of the word.
Youâll probably need an electrician to swap out the old one for a suitable new one.
There are specifications which are important when choosing one if you are competent to fit it yourself.
Something like this:
LED Trafo Mini 12V/DC, 0-30W
The Osram 46890 is a Halogen lamp if you read the specs.
The caretaker of the apartment is coming next week to see what can be done.
What needs to be done is outlined in my last post if that helps and he is unsure.
Wow!! Is that complicated when a lamp no longer works. LED sucks!
Tell me about it. I had so many problems and they are not all resolved:
Some (expensive) light fittings will need to be replaced as the transformer is built into the fitting and I canât find an LED one with the same footprint.
Some light fittings have halogens which do not have an LED equivalent of the same size.
Some had an old-style dimmer (which I replaced with a smart dimmer)
and more.
Annoyingly, even though I used a quality brand, some LED spots have already failed after a couple of years.
Iâm surprised the LED ones work even for a few seconds without a transformer! Unless it would have a built in one and from the picture it definitely doesnât. You better be careful fiddling with 220V and 12V, it is not freely exchangeable
This article and the comment section describe the pitfalls:
It does. The 12V transformer for the halogen lamps.
I got a fluorescent bulb above the stove. I have already addressed the problem because I wanted a brighter one.
I came accross all these problems (the size - didnât know about the dummy one can use) and in the end I decided âwanting a brighter and a LED oneâ was just luxury ![]()
I was glad to read in your link that itâs the landlort who has to pay this. So I will just wait until it breaks, then demand an expert to come and fix it.
After those first technical changes are done, life will be easy as before.
Of replacing fluorescent tubes. This is not what the OP is doing.
