Reporting traffic violations

Does anyone know if there is a way to report traffic violations, specifically in Canton Zug? I was in a crosswalk this morning on a 30 km/hr street and was nearly run down by a driver who was accelerating through, probably going 60-80, to try to beat the train to a crossing. He didn't, so I had plenty of time to take down his number plate, but now am not sure what to do with it.

Sure, you can go to the police and report the incident, but it would have made more sense to do that immediately after the event. I'm not sure what action will be taken, but if you stop some idiot from running into some other "unfortunate" in the future you'll have done us all a favor.

Go for it.

Go to the nearest copshop and hopefully they will do something about it. As Assassin says, if it stops someone being run over then you will have helped us all.

Unless you have a witness you will be wasting your time. They won't accept your denunciation, as this isn't France.

But if the driver is on record for the same sort of thing, they may take things further.

Thanks for your replies - I will stop by the police station to report this later today. I also looked up his number plates - interestingly, they come up as registered to a boat rather than a car...

Let us know how it went!

You might well be suprised, in my experience the police will follow it up. They may not fine the person without a witness but they will make it known that they know about it.

Each vehicle type (ship, motorcylce, car/lorry/trailer, etc.) has its own license plate type which starts at 1. See German Wikipedia#Gestaltung_der_Schilder) . If only a boat pops up the car may be blocked (or forged).

Oh. Interesting! Intrigue!!

Definitely report it just for this reason alone. Did you get a picture too?

Maybe the driver didn't see you? As it happens I didn't see a girl crossing the street just recently because my view was blocked by other cars and the zebra crossing is in the most stupid place possible. Fortunately, nothing happened as she had just started crossing from the other side.

But were you doing 60-80 Kph in a 30 zone like the OP mentions?

no, I was doing 30 in 50 zone, so it wasn't me.

And, another tidbit that I didn't mention in my original post, the crosswalk I was in is right next to the Kantonschule for young children, so it is often populated with little kids at that time of day!

Did the OP have a radar gun? I find mine a bit bulky to lug around all the time

No, the OP was too busy exercising his legally held right to cross the road on a designated crossing. I do agree that many of these crossings are in unsafe places, but don't know about this particular one.

Regardless of the speed the driver that the OP is complaining about should have stopped.

...and before you get carried away, my wife's Aunt was recently killed on a zebra crossing in Luzern because a lorry driver wasn't paying attention, so don't bother with shitty, smarmy comments.

Can you prove that?

Update: I wasn't able to report this to the police until today. The main problem was that since this was at such an early hour in the morning and on a small neighborhood street, I was the only witness. The police said that they could refer it to the court, but since it would just be his word against mine, it would definitely be thrown out.

However, the police were happy to give me the name and address of the vehicle's owner and encouraged me to write to him directly. I have done so (with translation help from a Swiss friend), so hopefully at least I'll scare the heck out of him by letting him know that I've reported the incident to the police.

Well done! Let's hope you don't find a horse head in your bed tonight!

Wait at least until tomorrow. The post here is speedy. But not that speedy!
