Residence permit after marriage (non eu)

Hello! I am a Non Eu who recently got married in Canton Bern.

I would like to ask anyone`s experience about the process of getting their residence permit (I assume it is the 1 year B permit). also how long did it took to get the card?

I am a bit confused how it works since the migration set up a fingerprint appointment, then suddenly the gemeinde asks for a new id/passport which has a new surname of mine (which is impossible for me to get at a short notice since I am not in my country nor my embassy can process one in less than a month). I also dont know if the gemeinde is right because I have other non eu friends who were able to secure their id without changing their passports yet. I dont really know what to do at the moment since I cant seem to find info about the process of getting the ID.

any help will be appreciated. thank you+

Welcome to the Forum and congratulations on your marriage.

It's been years since I did this, but back then they had no problem issuing my permit and also my driver's license in my maiden name. On the paperwork I completed at the gemeinde, it asked what my new name would be so I provided that.

It took a while for the new passport to come through. Once it did, I updated my residence permit and driver's license with the new name. I think the fee was around 15 or 20 Francs for the name change on each.

If the gemeinde is unhelpful, maybe contact the cantonal authorities?

Do you want to change your surname? It’s not a requirement here when you get married.
