RESTAURANT REVIEWS: Options *outside* Basel in DE/FR

For Michelin stars, l'ill is of course amazing, but as already mentioned,

http://www.auberge-saintlaurent.fr/ is very, very good. I always take the Surprise menu and have not been disappointed yet.

I would also recommend

Auberge Bellevue

Wentzwiller

http://www.restaurateurs-alsace.com/...urateur/?r=133

And Boeuf Rouge

9, RUE DE HESINGUE Hégenheim

Tél: 0389694000

A bit cheaper than Bellevue or Boeuf Noir in Hesingue, certainly less fancy than Saint Laurent, but always very nice food, especially the daily specials, and friendly service.

Ok found the menu.

Ph. 09 53 41 65 14

Address: 60 Avenue du Général de Gaulle, 68300 St. Louis

For an idea of price:

Onion Bajia: 8Euro

Chicken Curry 12Euro

Plain/ Garlin Nann: 3 - 7 Euro

I will certainly go for lunch some day. Looks like a good offer :

Poulet Tandoori, Légumes Biryani and Salade for 12Euro

Thanks everyone, some great ideas here.

I will just add my twopence..

Funfschilling; great prices, great atmosphere, yes, you have to wait a lot, the food is not always amazing, but always filling, nice cakes. playground, lovely setting, very cheap wine, pity you have to drive.

La diligence, yes, it's run by a family, very nice, always pleasant. I would go there more often if I wasn't a veggie. Not very cheap, but nice.

Cafe Literaire, a cosy spot, the waiter already mentioned is really a bit of a b*******, he nearly always has something unpleasant to say, not sure if he is like this with everyone or just doesn't like foreigners, but I've had a few 'encounters' with him. Basically, he will criticise you if you ask for anything strange, and he even told us off for putting unwanted chips (which we had not ordered, and told him we didn't want!) in bread basket. Nevertheless I enjoy the place, and if you find a book you like, you can take it, and leave one of yours in its place!

One place that I really like, but it's a bit far is La tour de turckheim. Turckheim is a lovely medieval town one hour from Basel. It's a really great restaurant for a family meal. Nice service, lots of choice, good prices.

I am always looking for good places for vegetarians, as most French places don't work well for me, and also good places to take children (ie not too expensive!)

Thanks for the great thread.

Another couple of options from the French side....

Au Petit Paradis - Hausgauen (approx 25 min drive from Basel).

Owned by a fiercely proud French Caledophile (she plays the bagpipes and EVERYTHING), this is a charming French restaurant set in the idyllic Alsace countryside perfect for cosy dinners as well as large events (weddings, work dos etc.). They have a 'Menu Secret' which is pretty decent value. Very helpful for assistance with the wine selection, without being sniffy (which can be tricky to find in some parts of France )

Check out the photos here: http://aupetitparadis.fr/

Restaurant Au Lion d'Or - Rosenau (15 mins drive from Basel)

Just a great selection of tasting menus, topping out at EUR49 for a full-on FEAST (snail-lovers, you're in for a treat). Great wine list. Great French classics - bring on the foie gras. Steak that is cooked tremendously. If you need a palette cleanser, consider the Trou Alsacien, which should poke a 'hole' in your stomach to fit in the outrageously delicious pudding selection plate. And if you're into digestifs... you should see the selection....

One more for Germany -

A bit further away this one, but the drive itself is so spectacular it's worth it... I promise...

Restaurant Adler - Baerental (by Feldberg) in the Black Forest

It never ceases to amaze me just how nearby the Black Forest is to Basel. It's easy enough to cruise up the motorway to Freiburg, but taking the 317 from Loerrach, to Todtnau, to Feldberg takes you right into the heart of this fantastic scenery, which looks stunning any time of the year (when the leaves start to turn it is pretty fantastic... but I digress).

This place can get booked up in the summer, or when the Baslers/Zurchers drop in for a taste of autumn (kuerbis and boar, what a great combo) so it's worth making a reservation. If you're lucky, you'll get a table by the window overlooking the valley, resplendent in the late summer sun. Most of the ingredients are sourced in the Black Forest so it's mildly satisfying to think that your plate hasn't come through the cold channel via Singapore to get to your fork.

Location is fantastic, with a great local wine list and a legitimate cup of espresso to wash it all down with. If you're really getting stuck in, they have several rooms upstairs if the drive back to Basel (50 mins) seems a bit much.

My favourites.

Lorrach

Cedars Lebanese restaurant - Scrummy Hummus

The Orchid - Thai restaurant

Saint Louis

La Diligence - Alsaciene

There is quite a new nice Chinese restaurant next to the Aldi.

Sol o Mio - Italian

Hesingue

Le Cheval Blanc.

I'm a bit on the foreign side, and don't speak much French, but he's always been great to me and the people I've gone with. Maybe he's mellowed out.

Are you sure he isn't being horrid to you, but you simply don't understand?

He smiles, brings me what I want, arranges the table how I want, even so far as to put three tables outside when the sun suddenly came out and a bunch of us turned up just wanting coffees. And I've been with people who speak French.

So even if he is saying horrible stuff about me that I don't understand, I get good service so am happy.

So there's the trick - don't learn any German or French and you'll never know if the locals are nasty to you. Works for me.

here there is a new place in leyman operated buy a UK or US guy?

Anyone got more info?

Very cool thread, thanks for all the reviews;it's definitely useful; will have to for sure do some crossborder dining.

Cheers

He is also very accomodating with high chairs for toddlers. Plus, he initiates greetings at the supermarket. :-D This is one of my favourite restaurants in the area.

If you want to try the French restaurants across the border, then now is the perfect time for that.

Until 10th of March, several restaurants are participating in Regio Gourmet - this means you'll get a 3-course set menu, including wine, water and coffee for 35.50 euros and 4 courses for 51.

here's the website and participating restaurants:

http://www.regiogourmet.com/

OH MY GOD! brilliant posh nosh at cheap prices ... and a trip to france!

A couple I didn't notice mentioned :

Restaurant Eintracht, Lörrach - Across from the Steakhouse. Decent Italian fare, has increased in price quite a bit in the past few years but still more reasonable than eating out in Basel.

http://www.eintracht-loerrach.de/

Sichtwerk, Einmeldingen - Not so far from Fünfschilling and only open in the evening but some excellent choices on the menu.

http://www.restaurant-sichtwerk.de/,menue

Oh, and another that comes to mind :

Ginza, Lörrach - http://www.restaurant-ginza.de/

Just beside "Im Grütt" Sports park, does all you can eat buffet for about €17 per adult which includes as many returns to the teppanyaki grill with your choice of ingredients as you can stomach as well as Sushi.

(Apologies, I don't seem able to edit my previous post)

Really, really happy that i have found this thread....straight on to the favourites bar!!!

Teppanyaki sounds nice... we are going shopping this afternoon to Lörrach, may try it Thanks for the tips!

We went to Ginza, in Lorrach, it's a bit far walking from the train station, but it's nice in this weather

The quality is not great, but it certainly is a lot of food for not so much money

Now we are looking for a place to celebrate a birthday for two may try some of the places in France you recommend

So for the birthday dinner we tried La Diligence, in St. Louis and it's quite good, food is great, service is nice and the price per dish is not that bad (we ended out paying quite a lot because we ordered wine, dessert and so on, but it was expected)

Hi all,

I've created a Google Map with all of the restaurants mentioned.

https://mapsengine.google.com/map/ed...4.kLDLsG-U0oPQ

I'll merge in "in Basel" restaurants from the old-style Google maps fairly soon.
