I tried this restaurant on the recommendation of this thread and I concur -- the food is excellent, fresh, and served in large portions. The prices are good -- side dishes are about EUR5-6 and main courses are around EUR12. We usually order a couple of side dishes and split a main course.
This restaurant is also very family/kid friendly. It seems that lots of people like to come here in big groups, and the wait staff seem used to it.
While the terrace is always packed, I've never had to wait more than a minute or two for an inside table.
Went to Tenmanya in Lorrach on Saturday. It was busy, but they just about coped.
Good (salmon only) sashimi and sushi. Fantastic, in fact, considering the other options around here. They also have a standard buffet, a teppanyaki grill (you fill a plate with dry ingredients, say which sauce you want, and the plate is brought back to your table once cooked), a Brazilian style meat-on-skewer guy who walks around the tables, and a dessert buffet.
All in for 22€.
I'll definitely go again. I must have eaten 22€ worth of salmon let alone everything else. Well, so it seemed. They obviously still turn a profit, despite the amount of boulder-shaped Germans who were wedged in many of the seats.
tenmanya definitely looks interesting, could well be something to try instead of always going to eintracht or the argentinian steak house (which in my opinion does THE best sangria, although expensive at 12euros for a half litre...is the price of one cocktail in Basel!). Speaking of italians in Lörrach we have been to the one by the cinema a few times, each time giving them another chance to redeem themselves from the previous time (well we wanted italian and on all occasions eintracht was sadly closed) and every time the service, particularly when trying to pay the bill, was appauling.
work colleague of mine mentioned there is a good japanese restaurant in mulhouse (le yi) but haven't been there before. same person also told me about a good chinese restaurant in hegenheim that lots of swiss people go to...don't know the name... anyone been to either of these?
We were there today and it was great, they have a cheaper menu at midday on Saturdays (only 13 euro, no Rodizio though but we had more than enough)
There was a wide choise of sushi for a all-you-can-eat place (octopus, sepia, herring, butter-fish, salmon, tuna, ... plus the veggie makis) no sashimi this time.
Also the red curry sauce for the teppanyaki was quite tasty

HEy guys, really nice and important topic, since Basel is so expansive to have a dinner "out". I was thinking about going in some Rodizio. I heard that there is some good and not that expansive place in Weil am Rhein. Do you guys know if it is this one? Would you reccomend me for a group dinner? What about prices==
On your recommendation, we tried Le Salerno today and got exactly the treatment you described. Warm welcome and a handshake from the owner on the way in. There's almost too much choice on the menu, so I thought I'd follow your advice and have the arrabiatta -- it was great. My wife had fresh pasta with girolles which was also good.
Two main courses, two desserts, a beer and a coffee came to EUR35 -- good value in our book!
The service, in particular, was much better than I've received in many restaurants in France.
Ok, here we go. Here are two places I've not been to yet, but most of you won't know about them, in Saint Louis. One is called Le Cave, it's really new, in Villa K hotel - www.lavillak.com , which is on the right on Avenue de Bale, 15 mins walk from border and just before the crossroads (where Simply supermarket is). It looks lovely and cosy and good service,not cheap. I chatted to the waiter and said it was a pity they had no veggie options and he said he'd say it to the chef, and then a couple of days later, the menu showed some nice veggie options. It looks lovely for a romantic evening out.
Cheaper is a new Indian restaurant, called Shiva - it says 'specialities in north indian cuisine - tandoori and curry, eat there or take away. It's 2 Rue des 3 rois, which is a side street to the right of Rue de Mulhouse (which is a continuation of avenue de bale) http://goo.gl/maps/K0tGh - phone 0954415350, serves lunch and evening - till 11pm, closed Sunday, Monday. you can either walk from the border - about 20 mins - or get off the 604 bus just after the crossroads and walk up (or after the red Leyes bakery and walk back).
I tried a takeaway from Shiva tonight, and really liked it,
Aloo gobhi - cauliflower/potato curry, 12 euros, came with nice rice, also got a naan bread, very nice 3 euros. I will definitely go and eat there one evening. It looks very nice. nice tablecloths/glasses/napkins. They have a wine list. There were candles and nice smell of incense. Hope lots of people try it, so it can stay open!
We went for dinner here last night, and loved it. Food really nice, especially pakoras, and naan bread. Service lovely too. I want everyone to go there so it stays open and we can keep going!
The "Wienerwald" in Zürich was practically driven out of the market when it became clear that they were definite and open racists (not giving any service to any kind of blacks). Much the same happened to a place on the corner Löwenstrasse/Bahnhofplatz which out of a sudden declared no longer to serve Arabs. The market works
Interesting --- however, the Wienerwald in Loerrach I believe is owned by a man of Middle Eastern descent and the worker/cash man there told me he is of Afghan/Iranian descent. Not racist
On occasion I have been known to have lunch in the Rheincenter, in Friedlingen.
It's not spectacular but what you get for your money is well worth the trip, especially if you wanna go shopping, for instance the asia shop in the mall stocks HP and Coleman's and Marmite and PG tips etc.
If you are too lazy to walk the few steps from the tram number eight terminus there is a bus and in short the number eight will go to Weil over Friedlingen.
